Incredible efficiency and range - the Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX concept teases the future

Travelling over 1,000km on a single charge, the VISION EQXX debuts lightweight composite bionic chassis construction, energy efficient wheels and tyres, a lightweight battery with improved energy density and an outstanding drag coefficient figure of Cd0.17

The Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX is not a production car, nor a showy concept vehicle but rather an engineering test bed for future Mercedes-Benz Group technologies. This week, the EQXX travelled from Sindelfingen across the Swiss Alps and Northern Italy, to Cassis on the Côte d'Azur in France - a journey of more than 1,000 kilometres (620 miles). The long-distance drive was completed with the charging socket sealed and accompanied by an independent expert from certification body TÜV Süd.

Averaging a record 8.7 kWh/100km energy consumption figure, the EQXX’s battery still held a 15% state of charge (around 140km) upon arrival. So how was this achieved?

The answer is of course, not due to one single factor, rather an incredible soup of advanced design and engineering. The EQXX’s slightly odd, rounded form provides an aerodynamic drag coefficient of Cd 0.17, lower than the slippery EQS which has a score of 0.20. Mercedes-Benz says that air “flows elegantly like a water droplet towards the rear".

According to Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, “The VISION EQXX is the most efficient Mercedes ever built. The technology programme behind it marks a milestone in the development of electric vehicles. It underpins our strategic aim to ‘Lead in Electric’,”

Low rolling resistance tyres were specially developed for the EQXX in conjunction with Bridgestone. At 185/65 R 20 97 T, the wide diameter and narrow width provide a 20 percent weight reduction, improved aerodynamic geometry, and in conjunction with lightweight magnesium wheels, greater driving range.

Bionic engineering is Mercedes’ fancy term for making stuff lighter. Tesla has pushed the automotive industry forward with its lightweight, single-piece castings, but Mercedes-Benz has gone further with its bionic-looking structural components. The skeletal aluminium chassis components have holes where structural rigidity is not necessary, providing a 20 percent weight reduction.

A 100 kWh battery — the same capacity as the Mercedes-Benz EQS — sits within the floor of the EQXX, however it weighs just 495kg, some 30 percent less than the EQS. With 50 percent less volume than its sedan sibling, the EQXX battery measures just 200 x 126 x 11 cm. The total weight of the vehicle is 1,755 kilograms.

While we won’t see the EQXX’s technology in production vehicles anytime soon, Mercedes-Benz has always been a leader in automotive engineering, safety and drivetrain development. The S-Class limousine debuted many features now taken for granted on the cheapest of econoboxes today, from the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), airbags, and adaptive cruise control. We can be certain that innovations debuted within the EQXX will begin to filter through to Mercedes’ production battery electric vehicles this decade.

Australian buyers now have eleven battery electric vehicles to choose from below $80,000, from the likes of Tesla, Hyundai, Volvo, Kia and Mercedes-Benz. How much do they cost, and what do you get for your money? Which is the EV Brief pick?

From the stalwart Nissan Leaf to Hyundai’s latest IONIQ 5, there’s a great range of battery electric vehicles available in Australia under $80,000.

Most will agree that electric vehicles in Australia are still expensive when compared to their petrol and diesel equivalents on an upfront cost basis, but this difference quickly evaporates over the total ownership period. The upfront purchase price has slowly been falling over the last few years however, as the EV market is becoming more competitive by the month in Australia. With an increasing number of rebates and concessions available across the Australian states and territories, incentives are there for buyers to jump into a BEV, and reduce their initial outlay. Stamp duty is waived on EVs in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and in New South Wales (NSW), while rebates will soon be available in Victoria, Tasmania and NSW up to a set cap of total EV registrations.

So where should your money go if you’re in the market for an electric vehicle in 2021? We’ve set an $80,000 top end limit for this list; Australia’s average annual income is around $90,000 a year, and 19 of the 47 EVs on sale in this country are priced between $40,000 and $80,000 MSRP, accounting for the majority of zero-emissions vehicle sales. Hyundai’s Ioniq Electric sedan (not to be confused with the latest IONIQ 5) is the grandfather of this list, and despite a facelift in 2020 jazzing up the exterior styling, the Ioniq Electric is still a little bland, lacking the chutzpah and in-car technology of rivals. That’s not to say the Ioniq Electric is a dud; While it may “only” have a 38.3 kWh battery, Hyundai’s engineers have wrung respectable performance and efficiency out of this car, with a 0-100 km/h time of 9.7 seconds, a WLTP range of 311 km, a real-world range of closer to 273 km, and an energy consumption figure of 13.8 kWh per 100 km. It features a no-nonsense cabin, with good interior quality, and in all honesty, would perfectly suit the needs of a driver who wanted an urban runabout with no emissions. Priced from $49,970, The Ioniq Electric Elite is the second-cheapest EV on sale in Australia, behind MG’s $40,990 ZS EV. For your money, you get a 10.25” touchscreen infortainment system, 16-inch alloy wheels, DAB+ digital radio, parking sensors with reversing camera, Infinity premium audio system, smartphone mirroring, and a smart key with push button start. Hyundai offers a 5 year/unlimited km warranty, and an 8 year/160,000 km battery warranty.

The IONIQ 5 represents the latest and greatest in terms of design and technology. With the Australian public able to order the IONIQ 5 from October 12, This chunky retro-SUV — the first vehicle from Hyundai to be based on the new E-GMP modular architecture — makes a bold style statement, and is perfect for drivers looking to stand out from the hoards of Tesla Model 3s in the inner city. Priced from $71,900 for the 160 kW/350 Nm rear-wheel drive variant, the IONIQ 5 features a 72.5 kWh battery pack, and clever electrical architecture that allows the car to charge from 10-80 percent in just eighteen minutes on a 350 kW DC fast charger. WIth a huge wheelbase, “zero gravity” seats, a spacious interior and V2L — the ability to power household devices through the car — The IONIQ 5 deserves your consideration. Hyundai Kona Electric

The Kona Electric compact SUV is a familar sight on Australian roads, and the electric variant underwent a facelift earlier this year. While the Kona isn’t the most spacious small SUV, it’s contemporary styling, great performance, and 5 year/unlimited kilometre warranty make it a compelling option for those partial to an elevated driving position. Unfortunately the interior of the Kona wasn’t afforded the same refresh as the exterior, with a slightly dated feel, but the Kona is a comfortable place to be, and offers a digital instrument cluster, Android Auto and Apple Carplay, and features like heated and cooled seats, LED headlights and a head up display on the top-spec Highlander model. Hyundai’s Kona Electric is impressively accurate with its range estimates too; you’ll have no problems squeezing 400 kilometres of driving out of this 64 kWh battery. Hyundai has also just launched an entry-level 39.2 kWh model, giving buyers the option of a 308 km range Kona Electric for $54,500 plus on road costs.

Kia Niro Electric

Kia’s Niro EV drives and performs much the same as its sister from the Hyundai family, but with a longer wheelbase and body, the Niro Electric is more suitable as a family hauler. Though buyers must sacrifice a bit of style for this pragmatic crossover, The Kia is capable and offers enough space for a young family. We found the ride to be a bit firmer than that of the Kona Electric, But the interior is still a comfortable place to be. Two models are available; a Niro EV S and an EV Sport. Both offer the same 150 kW/395 Nm motor of Hyundai, and bettering Hyundai, the Niro EV comes with a 7 year unlimited kilometre warranty, and an 8 year battery warranty. Mazda’s MX30 is a bit of an odd one; with a smaller battery capacity than all vehicles in this list bar Mini’s Electric city car, its 200km range and $65,490 price will likely relegate it to a niche product (within an already niche segment). It’s not all bad news though; if one is willing to stump up this cash, one will discover a very design-focused compact crossover, brimming with Mazda DNA, technology, and cool details. In fact, Mazda sees most buyers for the MX30 will be fans or current owners of the brand. Is that confidence in its product positioning? Or acceptance of limited consumer interest? Truth be told, the 200km WLTP range of the MX30 is probably enough for most Australians’ commutes and errands for a few days, but we can’t help but think this small battery offering would be much more compelling close to the MG ZS EV’s price point. And don’t mention the reverse-opening rear door. Mazda offers a 5 year/unlimited km warranty in Australia, and an 8 year/160,000km battery warranty.

The Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 should attract well-heel buyers, and encourage more to dip their toes into the world of EVs.

The EQA from Mercedes-Benz is a charged-up version of the petrol-engined GLA, and is similarly sized to Hyundai’s Kona Electric and Kia’s Niro EV with a 2,729mm wheelbase. Unfortunately, the EQA is a bit of a porker, tipping the scales at 2,040kg. This results in a relaxed 0-100 km/h time of 8.9 seconds, but the 375 Nm of torque should still provide ample get-up off the traffic lights. It carries the distinctive Mercedes-Benz EQ design DNA quite well, though we’d much rather an electrified A-Class than a high-riding crossover. While the design is quite restrained, that dinner plate-sized emblem and gloss-black front will command attention. On the inside, It’s typical Germanic quality, with the EQA carrying over Mercedes’ twin-screen MBUX dashboard. Mercedes-Benz now offers a 5 year/unlimited km warranty in Australia, and an 8 year/160,000 km battery warranty.

MG ZS EV

The MG ZS EV is a real headline grabber in the Australian EV market; sure, it is a compact crossover like the Hyundai Kona Electric, and “only” offers 263 km WLTP range, but it holds the crown for cheapest battery electric vehicle on sale in Australia, priced from $40,990. MG Motor is a subsidiary of Chinese automotive behemoth SAIC, and has surprised many with the quality, refinement and engineering of its vehicles, despite the attractive entry prices. The ZS EV includes limited information on charging and efficiency for those of us EV nerds, but offers many creature comforts, including an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with phone mirroring, heated front seats, parking sensors with a reversing camera, 17-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control with stop-go functionality and more. It also offers a five star Euro NCAP rating, with active safety systems including forward collision waring with autonomous braking, lane keeping/lane departure assist, and rear cross traffic alert. Sadly, the ZS EV still features halogen headlights; an odd cost saving measure when LEDs are far more efficient in the lighting department. The ZS EV also charges at 50kW peak rate, taking 45 minutes to reach 80 percent charge. MG Motor Australia offers a seven year/unlimited km warranty across its vehicle range, which also covers the lithium ion battery.

Mini Electric

What’s not to like about an electric Mini? Combining the style and quality associated with BMW’s retro hatch with an electric drivetrain is a great concept, and while the Mini Electric is a fine car, it’s not all the EV it could have been.

Rather than a dedicated electric vehicle platform and drivetrain, BMW has chosen to retrofit the BMW i3 drivetrain and battery into a Mini body, resulting in a car that quite literally uses yesterday’s technology. While not awful, the Mini is hamstrung by its price of $54,800. It’s not a cheap city car, but only offers a WLTP range of 233km from its 32.6 kWh battery supplied by CATL. The Mini tops out 50 kW when DC fast charging, so it’ll take a good 30 minutes to charge from 10-80 percent. It’s a little tubby for a Mini too at 1,440 kg, but still offers a 0-100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds thanks to its 135 kW 270 Nm front-mounted motor.

For the money, you do get a choice of five colours, a choice of 3 different 17 inch alloy wheel designs, rear view camera with parking assistant, LED headlights, wireless Apple Carplay and MINI navigation, a digital radio and home charging cable.

We’re sure the Mini Electric will still have a cabal of fans in Australia — those who must have the classic Mini style in a zero-emissions package — but those fans will have to have overlooked more spacious and more efficient EVs with better performance in the name of style. Mini offers a 3 year unlimited km warranty on the Electric model in Australia.

Nissan Leaf/Leaf e+

The Nissan Leaf is of course the stalwart of the electric vehicle scene in Australia. Loyal, dependable, always in the background of electric vehicle media announcements and launches, without ever really capturing much attention (or many sales). It’s style is driven by practicality — good aerodynamics, visibility and interior cabin space/comfort are the basis for its uneventful design. Priced from $49,990 in standard guise, the Leaf offers 270 km WLTP range from its 40 kWh battery. Buyers can upgrade to the Leaf e+ for $60,490, upping the WLTP range to 385 km from a 62 kWh battery. This provides similar usability to a Tesla Model 3 for the price. Unfortunately for the Leaf, Nissan has stuck with an older air-cooled battery design, rather than opting for liquid cooling. This ultimately affects the longevity of the Leaf’s batteries, as stable thermal management is key to long-term durability. The Leaf range also takes around 52 minutes at a rate of 50 kW to charge, utilising the CHAdeMO Japanese plug. While CHAdeMO is still found at most DC chargers, the Combined Charging System (CCS) plug seems to be the standard most manufacturers are adopting. Nissan Australia offers a 5 year/unlimited km warranty with the Leaf, and an 8 year/160,000 km warranty on battery defects.

Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus/ Long Range

The Tesla Model 3 doesn’t need much introduction; It’s the wunderkind of the Tesla range, single-handedly driving sales and revenue for the US automaker, and familiarising millions of people with battery-electric vehicles at the same time. The price of the Model 3 range has fallen since its introduction to Australia in 2019, and both the Standard Range Plus ($59,990 MSRP) and Long Range ($73,400 MSRP) make our sub-$80k list. They offer 440 km and 567 km of WLTP rated range respectively, more performance than you really need, and Tesla’s trademark spartan interior. While the Model 3 does have a steep learning curve, we feel the trade-off is a net positive for drivers; one of the best user interfaces in the business, seamless vehicle control from your mobile phone, allowing you to schedule charging, check vehicle status, and set the cabin temperature, constant over-the-air (OTA) updates, and a supercharger network (in Australia and globally) that provides peace of mind on any road trip. Volvo XC40 Electric

300 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque from Volvo’s XC40 Recharge SUV. Let that sink in for a moment. Volvo’s most powerful car, well, ever is a 2 tonne-plus family SUV that hits 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. There’s only one drivetrain and battery choice, pairing a 78 kWh battery with twin electric motors and all wheel drive. Volvo states a WLTP combined range of 418 km, and the XC40 Recharge can charge at 150 kW maximum speed. Although there’s little to differentiate the all electric XC 40 from its hybrid and petrol siblings, that’s also a good thing; inside you’ll find Volvo’s usual high quality interior, equipped with the new Android Automotive infotainment system (shared with the Polestar 2), keyless entry and start, LED headlights, digital radio and satellite navigation, and heated seats all round. There’s autonomous front and rear emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert and hill descent control. Priced from $76,990, we think it’s pretty good value considering inclusions and performance, and while the XC40 design is familiar, it is certainly aging well. Volvo offers a five year/unlimited km warranty in Australia, and an eight year battery warranty.

Verdict

In our eyes — although not necessarily the vehicle that the EV Brief family would purchase — Tesla’s Model 3 in Standard Range + guise is a compelling package that offers performance, technology, efficiency, range and practicality, all at a comparatively reasonable price. Starting from $59,900 MSRP in Australia (around $64,000 drive away) the Model 3 is a spacious family sedan with 400km real-world range that provides an ownership experience sure to convince Australians that the future is electric. In fact, we’d argue the Model 3 has already achieved price parity in its market segment when comparing it to similarly equipped entry-level cars from the likes of BMW and Audi; It’ll cost you around $70-75,000 to get into a BMW 330i or Audi A4 45 TSI.

The impression of good design, value, and practicality are all incredibly subjective when it comes to the automobile of course, hence why there is so much choice for consumers at the moment. While the Mazda Mx-30 or Hyundai Kona Electric may offer little to die-hard Tesla fans, there are others who will be charmed by the design, features and driving experience on offer from the Japanese and Korean brands.

Tesla’s Model 3 does however do everything so well, and as the poster child of the electric vehicle age, should inspire confidence in battery-propelled technology for those looking to transition from ICE vehicles. Tesla Model 3 owners have access to DC rapid chargers across Australia from companies like Evie, Chargefox, and the NRMA, but crucially they also have access to Tesla’s brilliant proprietary (for now) plug-and-play Supercharger network, with around 43 Australian sites at the time of writing.

For those unfamiliar, the latest Tesla Superchargers can add around 120 km (75 miles) of range in five minutes from a low state of charge, and are linked to a Tesla owner’s account, meaning that there’s no signing up to charging apps or paying with credit cards. If your car is eligible to charge on the network, it will perform a ‘handshake’ with Tesla’s charging software and the juice will start flowing in seconds.

Although Polestar Australia has released pricing for the upcoming Polestar 2, we’ve excluded it from this article as customer vehicles won’t be available until January. Big things are expected from Chinese brand BYD, as Australian importer Nexport readies a raft of models. The e6 minivan has landed in Australia, but at this stage is only a low-volume import. BYD’s Dolphin hatchback is expected to be released in Australia in 2022. Kia’s EV6 will also be one to consider; look out for more information on this vehicle towards the end of 2021. The Lexus UX 300 e is expected to launch in Australia this November, and we think it will be priced competitively against the Volvo XC 40 Recharge and Mercedes-Benz EQA 250.

German auto giants Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen accelerate battery production plans

Daimler secures 33 percent stake in Automotive Cells Company alongside Stellantis and TotalEnergies, and JAC Volkswagen announces construction of additional battery factory in Hefei, China.

Following news this week that Ford has partnered with Redwood Materials to secure future battery component supply chains, we have an announcement from Daimler that Mercedes-Benz has secured a 33 percent stake in Automotive Cells Company (ACC), a battery cell manufacturer with a presence in France. The stake is estimated to be worth around $1.2 billion USD ($1.65 billion AUD).

Stellantis and French petroleum company TotalEnergies own 33 percent each. Automotive News Europe reports Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kaellenius has said “the purpose of the partnership is to develop cells and battery modules and “help ensure that Europe remains at the heart of the auto industry — even in an electric era.”

Mercedes-Benz will provide technology and production expertise to the ACC partnership, and aims to manufacture at least 120 Gigawatt hours of cell capacity by the end of the decade with its partners. The company is moving towards a modular, standardised battery “kit” that allows battery cells and modules from different manufacturers to easily fit with its range of components and interfaces.

High energy density, performance and charging power are key benchmarks for the project according to Daimler. ACC will primarily use renewable energy for its production facilities, and the batteries themselves will be over 95 percent recyclable.

ACC’s first new factory will be located in Northern France, and plans to be operational by 2023.

Volkswagen powers ahead in China

Meanwhile, Chinese joint venture Jianghuai Automobile Group/Volkswagen (JAC Volkswagen) will also have a new battery factory operational by 2023, located in Hefei city. Automotive News Europe states that the factory's initial capacity will be 150,000 to 180,000 battery systems a year.

This is the fourth battery factory in the works for the Wolfsburg automaker, with plants in Brunswick and Salzgitter Germany coming online in the next couple of years. A battery factory in Chattanooga, TN and at Volkswagen technology partner Northvolt’s Skellefteå plant should also be operational by 2023. Volkswagen plans to produce unified, modular cells like Mercedes-Benz for its scalable MEB platform architecture, and has flagged an annual capacity of up to 180,000 battery systems from its Hefei plant.

“With a significant increase of battery-electric vehicles in the future, we need to focus on keeping key components like battery systems in our own value chain, allowing us to leverage Group-wide synergies and innovations” says Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen Group China. Smart Concept #1 Debuts at IAA Mobility Munich; new design language to carryover to production EV

The Smart brand is back with this crossover dubbed Concept #1. The first of the brand’s vehicles to be based on parent company Geely’s SEA EV platform architecture, the Concept #1 will be produced in China for global markets from 2022.

Smart is well known for its microcars, and was borne out of the partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch. While the Smart Fortwo and Forfour were never massive sales hits in markets with a penchant for big, thirsty, aggressive vehicles (looking at you Australia and the United States) the practicality and efficiency of the Smart range proved popular in Europe.

In 2019, Daimler AG entered a partnership with Geely Automotive, creating an equally-owned company Smart Automobile Co., Ltd, which aims to manufacture the marque’s future models in China for a global customer base.

Enter the Smart Concept #1; based on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA EV), this platform is expected to be used across Geely’s electric model range, from Smart and Volvo, to Zeekr and Lynk & Co.

To my eyes, there’s a bit of Kia Soul and Range Rover at the front, while the rear design hints at a connection to Mercedes-Benz SUVs. According to Kai Sieber, head of design at Smart, the production car will look very similar to this concept:

The interior will almost certainly be paired back for production, and again, there’s a Mercedes-Benz-ness to some design elements in here. Despite the compact body (4,290mm long), the interior appears quite spacious thanks to a 2,750mm wheelbase. For comparison, the Kia Niro EV/ e-Niro features a 2,700mm wheelbase.

Smart claims the Concept #1 will offer dynamic OTA software updates, as well as a raft of active safety technology and electricmobility-specific functions through its central infotainment system. A “three-dimensional globe” serves as the central menu item on the interior touchscreen, and as is currently the trend in other Chinese EVs, there will be an AI avatar to help access vehicle controls and functions (see NIO’s Nomi)

The Concept #1 will be produced in Xi’an, China from 2022, in left and right hand drive variants. No word yet on whether it will make it to Australia or the United States (probability is low), but expect right hand drive production initially for the UK and Japanese markets.

The Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 electric sedan debuts at IAA Mobility Munich

[Updated] Mercedes-Benz Australia has issued a statement regarding the local launch of the EQE series, noting that the first deliveries are expected in the second half of 2022.

The newest member of the Mercedes-Benz “EQ” electric series has debuted, in the form of the EQE mid-size sedan. More compact than the flagship EQS, with a 3120mm wheelbase (90mm shorter), the EQS shares many design cues from its larger sibling, but the overall package is more dynamic, with short overhangs and a low roofline.

Importantly, the EQE series provides greater interior space than the current E-Class, with 27mm more front seat shoulder room, 80mm greater overall length in the cabin, and a 65mm higher seating position. The boot/trunk capacity of the EQE is 430 litres.

Mercedes-Benz is initially offering a 90 kWh battery, promising a 660 combined WLTP range. According to Mercedes-Benz, the EQE 350 has a WLTP energy consumption figure of 19.3-15.7 kWh/100 km; a second, cheaper variant with a smaller battery, and performance variants with “around 500kW” are also in the works.

Mercedes-Benz has developed its battery chemistry and software in-house; a first for the manufacturer. Produced on-site at the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim factory, cells comprise nickel, cobalt and manganese in a ratio of 8:1:1. With less than 10 percent cobalt, Mercedes-Benz hopes to dispense with its use eventually as technology improves.

With two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PSM), the EQE 350 puts down 215 kW and 530 Nm via a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Rear wheel steering, borrowed from the EQS, is available as an option.

The 328 volt electrical system is capable of charging the EQE at 170 kW, taking 32 minutes to charge from 10-80 percent. Mercedes-Benz claims 250km (155 miles) of range can be added in 15 minutes.

A new level of luxury for the EQE 350 interior

Mercedes-Benz is likely to cop a fair amount of criticism for the similarities of the EQE to the EQS, and this extends to the interior. As EVs share platforms, drivetrains, and more, this unification or standardization is likely to be seen more often between models, as manufacturers look to offset the steep development and R&D costs of bringing all-new electric vehicles to market.

The MBUX Hyperscreen is available as an option on the EQE; a single, glass panel stretching across the dashboard with multiple displays for driver and passenger. The air vent band stretches across the width of the cabin, giving an impression of space. Optional automatic comfort doors greet the driver and open the front doors on approach.

Mercedes-Benz provides a HEPA filter, to clean incoming air with an activated carbon filter. It is also possible for the EQE to clean the interior prior to passenger entry.

Mercedes-Benz is offering its Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC system, which can maintain a set distance to vehicles ahead across all road types. The system features predictive speed regulation, navigation and charging integration, and Active Steering Assist, which improves safety and performance on all road types.

Active Lane Change Assist will steer the vehicle into an adjacent lane when an indicator is activated, provided broken lane markings are present, and there is no traffic in the adjacent lane.

Evasive Steering Assist can detect critical situations such as crossing pedestrians, cyclists and even, as Mercedes-Benz puts it, “longitudinal pedestrians”. The EQE will actively avoid these obstacles up to 110 km/h.

The EQE is an attractive car, perhaps wearing its aerodynamic skin better than the EQS, which, while full of presence, tends to look a little blob-like. Mercedes-Benz is slowly setting course for a completely electric model line up by 2030, and the company promises to offer battery electric vehicles in all product segments by 2022. We’ve seen the EQC, EQS, EQA, EQB and now EQE revealed; that leaves electrified C-Class, GLC-Class, GLE, and GLS-Class models — core volume sellers of the brand — to be revealed in the coming year. We’re also yet to see sports and performance variants of the Mercedes-Benz line-up go electric; We’d love to see what the automaker could do with its cabriolet and coupe ranges or the SLS AMG GT.

Mercedes-Benz has announced an end to its internal combustion-engined product offerings, moving towards a range of electric-only vehicles by 2030. Mercedes-Benz will cease the development and release of internal combustion vehicle architectures from 2025, launching three electric-only platforms in the same year.

The caveat provided by the company is that zero-emissions vehicles will prevail “where market conditions allow”, presumably giving the automaker a guilt-free emissions pass in markets where charging infrastructure and EV uptake is yet to develop.

Mercedes-Benz will cease the development and release of internal combustion vehicle architectures from 2025, and will launch three electric-only platforms in the same year. According to the company, customers will be able to choose an all-electric alternative for every model in the Mercedes-Benz range, and that “Mercedes-Benz intends to manage this accelerated transformation while sticking to its profitability targets.”

Mercedes-Benz’s Future Product Line-Up

Let’s look at the above image and get a sense of where the brand is heading this decade. We’re already familiar with the upcoming EQS luxo-barge next to Ola Källenius, and pictured to its right is the soon-to-be-revealed EQE sedan. Both vehicles are based on Mercedes-Benz’s Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) modular platform. Behind them, from left to right, we have the GLB crossover, and the currently on sale EQC and EQA crossovers. In the third row, a mysterious crossover —likely the EQS SUV— sits just ahead of the EQV.

Mercedes-Benz revealed its subbrands including AMG, Maybach and G-Class —made infamous in the 2010s as a symbol of gas-guzzling excess— will go electric. The EQS SUV will be the first vehicle in the lineup to receive the Maybach work-over, as teased in this image below.

Brand new electric platforms from 2025

Three electric-only architectures will be launched in 2025:

  • MB.EA will cover all medium to large size passenger cars, establishing a scalable modular system as the electric backbone for the future EV portfolio.

  • AMG.EA will be a dedicated performance electric vehicle platform addressing technology and performance oriented Mercedes-AMG customers.

  • VAN.EA ushers in a new era for purpose made electric vans and Light Commercial Vehicles, which will contribute to emission free transportation and cities in the future.

 

Manufacturing and battery cell demands

Mercedes-Benz plans to install battery cell capacity of more than 200 Gigawatt hours with partners, and sets its sights on eight Gigafactories to support this product rollout. The company will develop new partnerships for R&D and production of battery cells in Europe.

Following Tesla’s lead and in an attempt to reduce the bureaucracy and cost of development for legacy automakers, Mercedes-Benz is reorganizing its powertrain activities to put planning, development, purchasing and production under one roof. The company claims this will deepen the level of vertical integration in manufacturing and development and electric drive technology.

Mercedes-Benz’s next-generation batteries will debut in 2025 and will be highly standardized, and suitable for use across more than 90 percent of all Mercedes-Benz cars and vans according to the automaker. The company intends to focus battery cell and module manufacturing in Europe, keeping the supply chain close to home. It will work with technology partners across Europe such as SilaNano to further increase energy density in batteries through silicon- carbon composite anodes.

Mercedes-Benz is also developing solid-state technology, with an aim to create batteries with even higher energy density and safety. The company is already trialling Citaro buses with solid-state batteries.


EV Brief’s Take

This is all great news in our view. After a general reluctance to commit to electrification from Germany’s big automakers, Mercedes-Benz is officially going “all in”. Massive investment in capital works, battery gigafactories, and cell R&D, as well as ensuring reduced emissions and CO2 neutrality from the production process will allow the brand to get ahead of strict EU emissions regulations, while ensuring future commercial viability.

Streamlining its business through centralised production, common battery modules and shared platform architecture will not only lead to positive business outcomes and an increased return on investment, but it should also bring with it faster product rollout timeframes, and a greater diversity of product offerings.

Daimler, Traton and Volvo jointly invest 500 million euros in heavy vehicle EV charging network

Three of Europe’s biggest truck manufacturers - Daimler Trucks, Traton and AB Volvo plan to invest 167 million euro each ($262 million AUD/$198 million USD) in a new joint venture business to develop a Europe-wide charging network for battery electric heavy vehicles.

Three of Europe’s biggest truck manufacturers - Daimler Trucks, Traton and AB Volvo plan to invest 167 million euro each ($262 million AUD/$198 million USD) in a new joint venture business to develop a Europe-wide charging network for battery electric heavy vehicles.

The notion of electrified heavy vehicles scares many away from even discussing the transition away from polluting trucks; weight, cost, charging and range are all cited as insurmountable obstacles, and there aren’t many manufacturers with production-ready battery-electric models. Even Tesla’s much-lauded Tesla Semi is at least twelve months away.

This joint venture aims to address the issues of range anxiety and charging; according to Martin Daum, chief executive of Daimler Trucks, "The key ingredient in the future rolling-out of electric vehicles will be the infrastructure. It will be the big bottleneck"

The European Car Industry Association (ACEA) wants 50,000 heavy vehicle charge points across Europe by 2030, warning that a dense network of recharging sites in all EU member states is crucial to making road freight carbon neutral by 2050.

All three companies currently have electric trucks in development and are aiming for the joint venture company to be operational by 2022. The company will be headquartered in Amsterdam and lists an initial objective of installing 1,700 charging points within five years.

With time, it’s expected that other manufacturers will join the new joint venture. "In order to accelerate further, we need additional partners, additional networks, and public funds," AB Volvo CEO Martin Lundstedt said. "We will continue to be very fierce competitors. But we need a new platform to compete upon."

The ACEA is also a proponent of hydrogen fuel cell-powered transport and is working to set a target of installing 300 hydrogen refueling stations in the EU by 2025. Daimler, Toyota, Volvo, and Hyunda are among legacy automakers investing in fuel cell technology, and Hyundai is currently operating Xcient hydrogen fuel cell rigid body trucks in Switzerland.

Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan enters series production ahead of summer 2021 launch

The Mercedes-Benz EQS has entered series production at the company’s Factory 56 in Sindelfingen, Germany, alongside Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Mercedes-Maybach models. The production facility is the result of over 730 million Euros invested, as Mercedes-Benz looks to rolling out its electrification strategy, and reducing its environmental footprint.

Factory 56 will be completely CO₂-neutral, thanks in part to a rooftop photovoltaic system and energy storage system based on reused vehicle batteries. Mercedes-Benz plans to use Factory 56 as an environmentally friendly manufacturing blueprint to transfer to its other vehicle plants worldwide.

Mercedes-Benz claims to have reached new levels of efficiency in the assembly process, due to high levels of digitisation and an MO360 digital ecosystem that focuses on providing the best possible support to its 1,500+ workers at Factory 56.

According to Michael Bauer, Site Manager and Head of Production of Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen Plant, "With the EQS in our portfolio, we are once again proving the future viability of the Sindelfingen site: Here tradition is combined with a new understanding of innovation and sustainability. Thanks to our highly competent team, we have successfully completed the start of production of the EQS at the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant."

We’ve already covered the technical details, interior and Hyperscreen quite recently, so let’s look at what Mercedes-Benz has revealed today.

Exterior Design

It’s nice to finally be able to put a face to the EQS name. Designing such a flagship vehicle must be rather difficult, and on the whole, Gorden Wagener and his team must be congratulated. The EQS is a balance of progressive style and refined, familiar luxury. It’s a vehicle that has to outline the brand’s future direction, while still appealing to the S-Class buyer.

There are some odd angles however; soft, sloping front and rear are a result of function over form no doubt. With a drag coefficient of 0.2 cd, Mercedes Benz claims the EQS is the slipperiest sedan in the world.

Mercedes Benz states that the design philosophy behind the EQS can be defined as ‘Sensual Purity’ and that this is realised through clear, uncomplicated surfaces, curves and surface-emphasising modelling. It’s certainly not a fussy design, but will it appeal to buyers looking for a certain level of aggression and sportiness? Perhaps we’ll have to wait for an AMG version to find out.

The short front end and cab-forward look is almost the antithesis of the long-hooded luxo-barge look we’ve come to expect from this segment over the last few decades. The front end is handsome, if considerably more restrained than the EQS concept car. The black ‘grille’ on the front of the EQS is available with a Mercedes star pattern, if customers choose the AMG Line Exterior or Electric Art Exterior.

Frameless, coupé-like doors and a high, arched beltline draw the eye down the body to the rear of the EQS. Flush doorhandles aid aerodynamics, and provide a clean side profile view. The glasshouse is accentuated with chrome, and a two tone paint scheme is available.

Broad, generous surfaces, reduced join in body panels create an almost seamless transition between glass and bodywork at the rear. The rear tail light assembly is a broad, futuristic swoop of red, accentuating the width and hinting of the power within the EQS. 19-22 inch wheels are available, and the three exterior package inclusions are listed below:

In our eyes, the most attractive angle of the EQS is a slightly raised and offset front three quarter view. The body is made of aluminium to keep weight down, and the front hood (bonnet) is of a clamshell design. Frunk fans will be disappointed to learn there’s no front storage compartment, but there’s ample space in the passenger compartment and rear trunk, with 610 litres of cargo capacity.

At 5.2 metres long with a 3.2 metre wheelbase — 106mm longer than the W223 S-Class — the EQS is a big car. The EQS 450 weighs in at 2480 kg (5467 lb), while the EQS 580 is 2585 kg (5,698 lb).

Mercedes Benz is expected to release an AMG performance variant of the EQS in the future, as well as a cheaper version with a smaller battery capacity. Europe, the UK and North America should see the EQS launch in the second half of 2021, while it’s expected that Mercedes-Benz Australia will bring the EQS down under in December 2021/January 2022.

Audi’s Q4 E-Tron is an important vehicle for the Ingolstadt manufacturer, as it is the first mid-size SUV based on the new modular electric MEB architecture. Again, the automaker has teased plenty of information and images of the Q4 E-Tron, but we can’t wait to see final specifications, colour and trim options. The Q4 E-Tron will go head-to-head with BMW’s iX3 and Tesla’s Model Y, but also with new competitors in the compact to mid-size SUV category. This is the first time South Korean manufacturers are competing in the premium segment with genuinely innovative, class-leading vehicles in the form of Kia’s EV6 and Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 , and we would expect many buyers to be seriously cross-shopping these vehicles when they hit the market.

Is there anything special about the technology in the EQS?

In typical Mercedes Benz fashion, the press kit is a weighty tome. The largest battery available is a whopping 107.8 kWh, good for a claimed 770 kilometres (478 miles) of range on the WLTP combined cycle. Mercedes-Benz states the battery management system is designed for over the air updates, and that the batteries’ cell chemistry has been revised to reduce cobalt use, with the optimised active material constituting nickel, cobalt and manganese in a ratio of 8:1:1.

AC charging is available up to 22 kW, and DC charging can pump 200 kW into the EQS, good for 300 kilometres (186 miles) of charge in 15 minutes.

In terms of the drivetrain, Mercedes-Benz has worked with Bosch to develop synchronous motors for the EQS, unlike the asynchronous type found in the EQC. This means that the speed of the stator's magnetic field is equal to the motor's rotor speed, eliminating slip, and providing greater refinement, precision and efficiency. The motor on the rear axle features six-phase operation with two windings of three phases each, and stators with pull-in winding.

Mercedes-Benz claims a particularly strong magnetic field, improving energy efficiency, performance and reducing space in these new motors. The 4MATIC all wheel drive system continuously distributes the drive torques between the front and rear axles.

Braking recuperation is available, with drivers able to select from three stages. The recuperation output is up to 290 kW, with the ability to brake to a stop.

How smart is the EQS?

Tesla’s navigation route guidance has the ability to accurately calculate projected energy consumption versus real time consumption to your destination based on driving inputs, traffic and topography has always been considered industry leading. Mercedes-Benz will be introducing Navigation with Electric Intelligence on the EQS, which promises to calculate routes based on projected energy demand including topography of route, ambient temperature, energy consumers and more, as well as responding dynamically to congestion and changes in energy demand.

Critically, the charging process must be simple for the EQS. Mercedes-Benz will be attempting to lure current S-Class owners into their flagship EV, and will also be looking to make conquest sales from the likes of Tesla, Porsche and BMW. It is critical that the charging process requires minimal effort for EQS owners, and Mercedes-Benz is promising a plug-and-charge service at European Ionity chargers where the vehicle and charger will automatically perform a handshake and sort out payment. It’s expected that United States EQS owners will have access to the Electrify America (EA) DC fast charging network, but it’s imperative that this flagship vehicle avoid charging issues seen by many on the Electrify America network.

The MBUX Hyperscreen is the (optional) pièce de résistance, combining all features of the drivers’ instrument panel, dashboard and infotainment into a single glass panel. Mercedes-Benz likes to reference historical details, and the thin silver shadow frame around the screen, combined with the single ventilation band and a narrow leather frame are reminiscent of classic instrument panels according to the automaker.

If one doesn’t option the Hyperscreen, the interior looks quite similar to the latest W223 S-Class. with a single, vertically mounted touchscreen. The EQS is set to debut on April 15, before going on sale in July/August 2021. Scroll down for 10 interesting facts about the interior of the EQS:

10 interesting facts about the interior of the EQS:

  1. With the MBUX Hyperscreen, multiple displays merge seamlessly to create an impressive curved screen band over 141 centimetres wide. The area perceived by the occupants measures 2432.11 sq. cm.

  2. The large glass covering the MBUX Hyperscreen is curved in three dimensions in a moulding process at temperatures of approx. 650°C.

  3. The HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air) as part of the optional equipment ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL Plus cleans the incoming outside air at its very high filtration level. Over 99.65 percent of particles of all sizes are eliminated, and the adsorption area is equivalent to about 150 football fields.

  4. The key applications are always offered on the top level in the field of vision, depending on the situation and context, as part of Mercedes’ “zero-layer design”.

  5. The "Mercedes-Benz pattern" is used in several places in the EQS interior such as on the backlit trim elements or on the passenger display as a digital decorative image. It is an abstracted, three-dimensional star pattern based on an early trademark of the Daimler Motorengesellschaft.

  6. The EQS comes with the two soundscapes Silver Waves and Vivid Flux, and they can be selected or switched off as sound experiences on the central display. The algorithms and sounds for the sound design are created in-house at Mercedes-EQ by physicists, sound designers, media designers and mechatronics specialists.

  7. Mercedes-Benz is showcasing its modern, leather-free material for the interior, NEOTEX. According to the company, it “combines the look of nubuck leather and high-tech neoprene”. There are eight coordinated colour combinations in the interior.

  8. More than 40 new inventions have found their way into EQS. In addition, 20 design applications protect the design of the vehicle.

  9. The design of the door panels borrows from the interior design of modern living spaces. Doors and their centre panels emerge from behind the MBUX Hyperscreen to span the space. A surface-mounted modular body floats like a sideboard in front of the door panel.

  10. ENERGISING COMFORT features three programmes—Forest Glade, Sounds of the Sea and Summer Rain—which provide an immersive and realistic on-board sound experience. These calming sounds were created in consultation with the acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton.

Mercedes-Benz is set to get a head start over its rivals in Australia, beating Hyundai’s IONIQ 5, Tesla’s Model Y and BMW’s iX3 to market this year. The manufacturer has confirmed that the EQA 250 will open for orders from Australian customers next month, with deliveries to commence in June.

Priced from $76,800 AUD for the EQA 250 and $84,100 for the EQA 250 Edition 1 (excluding on-road costs), both models feature an asynchronous electric motor at the front axle, with 140 kW (190 PS) or power and 375 Nm (276 lb ft) of torque.

Regarding the battery, Mercedes-Benz has a 420 volt lithium ion battery with five modules and 200 cells in a double decker design. It offers a net energy content of 66.5 kWh, with an energy consumption rating of 16.2kWh/100km. The EQA 250 offers 480 kilometres ADR range (426km/265miles WLTP), so expect around 400km in real world Australian conditions.

Mercedes-Benz Australia is offering a comprehensive standard equipment list on the EQA. The EQA 250 receives adjustable damping with DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes, 19-inch AMG 5-twin spoke AMG alloy wheels, the twin-10.25-inch MBUX infotainment system/instrument cluster, Apple Carplay/Android Auto, wireless phone charging, DAB+ digital radio, DISTRONIC active distance assist cruise control, and active assists including blind-spot monitoring, Traffic Sign Assist, lane keeping and automatic emergency braking.

The Edition 1 package is a limited volume option, and includes the above features plus 20-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels in matte copper, AMG exterior trim, Neva grey leather, backlit design trim elements in the interior, silver chrome metallic finishes, AMG pedals, illuminated door sill panels, a unique vehicle key, sports multifunction steering wheel, and most importantly, “Edition 1” floormats.

We can’t wait to see the EQA 250 land in Australia. While the EQA range is still based on Daimler’s MFA2 platform architecture—we’ll have to wait for the EQS to debut the modular MEA platform—it’s size, performance, equipment, looks and price should see it compete admirably in the popular premium compact crossover market in Australia. Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the second “EQ” battery electric vehicle to join the range. Essentially an EV variant of the automaker’s recently released GLA SUV, the EQA 250 joins the larger EQC in 2021, and Mercedes-Benz expects to release further electric derivatives of popular models over the coming 2-3 years; namely the EQE and larger EQS sedans, and an EQB based on the GLB SUV.

Despite a 7.5 per cent downturn in global sales for 2020, most likely due to COVID-19, Mercedes-Benz reported 2,164,187 units for the year. Depending on how you look at it, the company is either a product planner’s dream or nightmare, with Mercedes-Benz occupying almost every market segment imaginable. With eight SUVs already available — GLA, GLB, GLC, GLC Coupe, GLE, GLE Coupe, GLS and EQC — one could be mistaken for thinking the company has more than enough variants available to cater to market needs.

Mercedes-Benz thinks differently, and the EQA will launch in Germany in 2021 at a price of €47,540 — USD$57,700/AUD$74,000 — competing directly with the likes of Volvo’s XC40 Recharge, BMW’s iX3, Volkswagen’s ID.4 as well as the Tesla Model 3 and model Y. It’s likely to make it to Australia too, but we think that given the size and performance of the vehicle, for the US dollar equivalent of €47,540 Mercedes-Benz North America won’t see a compelling case for bringing the EQA to North America.

Exterior Design

No one will accuse Mercedes-Benz designers of being too avant-garde with their designs. The EQA is a pleasingly soft interpretation of a mix of EQC and GLA design cues. While other fully electric vehicles eschew traditional design cues such as grilles and intakes and long front ends, the EQA still looks like a combustion-engined vehicle. It’s almost as if it doesn’t want to be the odd one out amongst its peers.

Call us strange, but if a design element serves zero function and provides no net benefit, wouldn’t it be better to remove it? Nevertheless, the EQA is sure to attract present Mercedes-Benz customers who are comfortable with the corporate design language. Mercedes-Benz claims the vehicle’s “electro-aesthetics” of the design are indicative of the Progressive Luxury within; what this actually translates to is blue “EQ” lettering, a high-gloss black front grille, multi-spoke aerodynamic wheels and an LED rear light bar strip.

With a wheelbase of 2.729cm, it is slightly shorter than VW’s ID.4 at 2.766cm, and considerably shorter (17cm) than the Tesla Model Y’s 2.891cm wheelbase. Overall length of the EQA is 4.463cm, and the width is 1.834cm. This compares to the GLA’s dimensions of 2.699cm (-3cm) for the wheelbase, 4.445cm (-1.8cm) for the length and 1.804cm (-3cm) for the width.

Interior Design

On the inside, you’re greeted with the now familiar twin 7-inch displays (European base specification) or twin 10.25-inch displays that Australian and North American Benz owners would recognise. The Mercedes-Benz User Experience(MBUX) system has a number of different display presets available, and a degree of configurability. The dashboard and doorcard design is very similar to that of the GLA, with turbine-style air vents, a recessed dash inlay area, and conventional shapes and materials. Rose gold metallic-look detailing around buttons and air vents, a-la Mercedes-EQC is a must-have option for those looking to add a touch of the current fashion zeitgeist; think Apple’s rose gold iPhone, or the last Michael Kors watch you saw on someone’s arm and you get the picture.

Blue has become the de rigeur colour to signify an electrified variant; think about it. From Nissan’s Leaf, to the range of BMW’s “I” vehicles, blue is a colour used to represent electricity, possibly due to the fact that is how the human eye “sees” it. It’s no surprise then that Mercedes splashes blue all over the interior, from the dash, to the seating, trim and ambient lighting.

Battery and Drivetrain

The performance of the EQA will be adequate if not scintillating; with a 66.5 kWh (net) double decker lithium ion battery comprised of 200 cells, Mercedes-Benz claims the 140kW (187hp) / 375Nm (275 ft-lb) motor will reach 100km/h in 8.9 seconds, and hit a top of 160kmh (99mph). Mercedes-Benz claims a WLTP combined range of 426km (265mi) and due to the battery mass, the EQA is a bit of a porker, at 2,040kg (almost 4,500lbs). Mercedes states the EQA launch variant will hold an energy efficiency of 15.7 kWh/100km.

Mercedes announced last year that they would be teaming up with CATL for future battery projects, but it is not known at this stage whether the EQA is a result of this collaboration, or whether its energy platform comes from the wholly owned subsidiary Deutsche Accumotive based in Kamenz, Germany.

The EQA utilises permanent magnet technology, whereby the AC motor incorporates magnets. The magnets – and thus the rotor – follow the rotating alternating current field in the winding of the stator. The engine is described as synchronous, because the rotor turns at the same rate as the magnetic field of the stator.

The EQA also features an intelligent recuperation system, which continuously generates coasting simulations in the background during motion. Depending on the state of charge of the battery and the traffic situation, the car computes whether the vehicle should ideally be allowed to coast with the lowest possible driving resistance with the driver's foot off the pedals, or whether it should be decelerated so that the battery can be charged.

Eco Assist functions also take into account route profiles, speed limits and traffic flow to assist with the vehicle’s efficiency strategy. According to Mercedes-Benz, the driver can select the recuperation function manually from a choice of five different modes using the two paddles behind the steering wheel. The paddle on the left increases the level of recuperation, the paddle on the right reduces it.

Autonomy and Vehicle Technology

Mercedes-Benz has long been a leader in advanced vehicle safety systems, and features that were once only available on an S-Class are now widely seen across the range. On top of the now expected active safety systems, the EQA features Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with the braking for stationary vehicles in front, and extended, automatic moving off in a traffic jam. The Active Speed Limit Assist with Evasive Safety Assist reacts to changing speed limits in conjunction with Traffic Sign Assist, carries out route-based speed adjustment ahead of bends, roundabouts, toll booths etc and when approaching a traffic jam.

The Navigation with Electric Intelligence system takes into account the electric range, the current electrical consumption, the topography of the proposed route (due to the energy requirements) and the temperatures along the way (due to the duration of the charge). It also looks at the traffic situation along the planned route, as well as the available charging stations to be found there and their capacity. Mercedes states that the customer does not necessarily always have to take on board a full charge, but will be given a specific recommendation as to the required charging time at the charging station. The charging station stops will be planned in the way that is most favourable for the overall travelling time. In other words, for those familiar with Tesla’s route planning, the car will advise shorter, more frequent stops rather than one long charging stop if it results in a faster overall trip. This is similar to the software from A Better Route Planner.

The EQA features a heat pump, that utilises waste-heat from the drivetrain and uses it to warm the cabin. The driver can also pre set the desired temperature of the cabin before commencing a journey.

The EQA 250 with a 66.5 kWh battery and 140kW motor will be the first to launch in Europe mid-2021, and in Australia/New Zealand by the end of 2021. It’s likely that more performance-oriented versions will appear from 2022.

Mercedes-Benz is premiering its new MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) multimedia interface, which will debut in the upcoming EQS battery electric sedan. Mercedes-Benz is premiering its new MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) multimedia interface, which will debut in the upcoming EQS battery electric sedan. Dubbed MBUX Hyperscreen, the digital experience promises to transform how we interact with the vehicle, and provide a “wow” effect according to Mercedes-Benz.

The marketing video (below), was almost like one which you might expect from Apple or Samsung, with the carmaker spruiking the technical specs of the computing power behind the new in car system. With 8 CPU cores, 24-gigabytes (GB) of RAM and 46.4 GB per second RAM memory bandwidth, Mercedes-Benz is promising a next-generation infotainment system that delivers an intuitive experience, and actually learns driver behavior.


According to Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler Group, “We merge technology with design in a fascinating way that offers the customer unprecedented ease of use. We love simplicity, we have reached a new level of MBUX.”

Sajjad Khan, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG and CTO states that the MBUX Hyperscreen continually gets to know the customer better through machine learning, and delivers a personalised infotainment and operating offering before the driver has to even access or scroll through menus.

With context sensitive awareness, the MBUX system proactively displays the right functions at the right time for the user, supported by artificial intelligence. The system is optimised by changes in the surroundings and user behaviour. The so-called zero-layer provides the user at the top level of the MBUX information architecture with dynamic, aggregated content from the entire MBUX system and related services; deep menu layers — a criticism of complex current generation infotainment systems — are a thing of the past.

Mercedes-Benz provides these four examples as use cases:

The user can accept or reject the respective suggestion with just one click:

  • If you always call a certain friend on the way home on Tuesday evenings, you will be asked to make a corresponding call on that day of the week and at this time of day. A business card with its contact information appears, and - if stored - its image appears. All MBUX suggestions are linked to the user's profile. If someone else drives the EQS on a Tuesday night, this recommendation is not made – or there is another, depending on the preferences of the other user.

  • If the EQS driver regularly uses the massage function according to the hot stone principle in winter, the system learns and automatically suggests the comfort function in wintry temperatures.

  • If the user regularly switches on the heating of the steering wheel and other surfaces for seat heating, for example, this is suggested to him as soon as he presses the seat heating.

  • The chassis of the EQS can be lifted to provide more ground clearance. A useful function for steep garage entrances or sleep policemen. MBUX remembers the GPS position at which the user made use of the "Vehicle Lift-Up" function. If the vehicle approaches the GPS position again, MBUX independently proposes to lift the EQS.

In terms of design, Mercedes-Benz has integrated ambient lighting behind the glass, making the display unit appear to float on the seamless instrument panel. There is also a separate passenger display, a-la Porsche Taycan. If no passenger is seated, the display becomes an animated decorative pattern of stars, so as not to distract the driver with additional infotainment content.

Central and passenger displays utilise OLED technology, where non-active pixels remain switched off, meaning that they appear as deep black rather than a greyish black that is visible on many computer monitors. With a multifunction camera and light sensor to adjust the brightness of the display and pre-empt driver actions, it’s expected that the EQS’ active and passive safety systems will work seamlessly with the MBUX Hyperscreen.

It appears the MBUX Hyperscreen takes the best of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class infotainment system, and builds upon it, seamlessly integrating multiple displays into a single panel. It’s a distinctly different approach from other EV manufacturers such as Telsa, who prefer to combine all features into a single, centrally-mounted touchscreen. Mercedes-Benz spends billions on R&D and probably millions determining customer preferences, so it’s likely their customers still prefer something akin to a traditional instrument cluster.

While the Mercedes-Benz system provides haptic touch feedback, There’s much criticism about the trend to remove all buttons from a vehicle’s interior. While we think it’s great to seamlessly integrate all system functions into one unit, presumably minimising cost and improving reliability, if that comes at a cost — the ease of quickly operating essential controls — then its not worth it. We hope Mercedes’ “zero-layer technology” and voice control systems can make basic actions like adjusting the climate control temperature or re-routing a navigation destination quick and painless, but we’ll have to wait until the vehicle’s reveal for more information. Mercedes-Benz will reveal the EQA SUV on January 20, and we think the EQS should break cover sometime in the first quarter of 2021.

Mercedes-Benz Accelerates EV Rollout; 8 BEVs In Production by 2022

Mercedes-Benz has today announced announced its ambition to fully electrify the entire product portfolio by 2039 as part of a plan to achieve CO₂ neutrality, and this includes the rollout of eight all-electric Mercedes-EQ models from 2022 built on dedicated electric architecture. The first mass-market Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) from Stuttgart, the Mercedes-Benz EQC has been available around the world since 2019, and is based on the pre-existing GLC SUV platform.

Update: Mercedes-Benz has released an additional rendering, which you can find below. This vehicle looks to be pretty close to final production design, and will be Mercedes’ first D-segment vehicle without a traditional grille.

Mercedes-Benz has today announced announced its ambition to fully electrify the entire product portfolio by 2039 as part of a plan to achieve CO₂ neutrality, and this includes the rollout of eight all-electric Mercedes-EQ models from 2022 built on dedicated electric architecture. The first mass-market Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) from Stuttgart, the Mercedes-Benz EQC has been available around the world since 2019, and is based on the pre-existing GLC SUV platform.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS, as shown above and below will be the first to commence production in early 2021, and is essentially the luxurious S-Class reimagined for a zero emissions future. From the camouflagued vehicle, we can see an imposing physical presence -something the S-Class has always been known for- and a low, wide nose, possibly with a faux grille a-la Jaguar i-Pace or an indentation around the badge. The bonnet (hood for you North Americans!) rises steeply into a huge windscreen, which appears to continue above the driver’s head, as is the trend nowadays.

The high bootline and almost fastback look is unusual for the S-Class segment, however the large tail lights with some presumably funky graphics and lightbar spanning the width of the rear should provide a visual family reference to the EQC, while defining the EQS’ unique character.

The side profile looks a little slab-sided under camouflague, with the C-pillar, doors and rear fender covering a large area relative to the glasshouse, however it looks like there may be some interesting surfacing hiding under that blue wrap. The Goodyears on the test car look to be hugging at least 21-inch or 22-inch wheels, as is the trend these days. That’s aesthetics over efficiency for you.

The EQS will be produced in Sindelfingen from early 2021, while the less expensive EQA and EQB models will be produced at the Rastatt and Kecskemét (Hungary) plants respectively. We can expect the world premiere of the EQA on January 20, 2021 according to Mercedes-Benz.

Fast forward to the second half of 2021, and Mercedes-Benz states that the EQE ‘business sedan’ will begin production at the Bremen plant, as well as in Beijing for the Chinese domestic market only. Continuing the the Germans’ fondness for manufacturing SUVs in the United States, the EQE and EQS SUV variants will be manufactured at the brand’s Tuscaloosa Alabama plant.

According to Mercedes, a total of eight Mercedes-EQ electric vehicles will be produced at seven locations on three continents by 2022.

Daimler’s Battery Plans

Battery development, manufacture and supply will obviously be a critical part of this increase in BEVs, and Mercedes-Benz plans to increase investment in the energy side of manufacturing, alongside battery specialists.

Mercedes-Benz and BAIC have jointly set up a battery production plant at the existing location in the Yizhuang Industrial Park in Beijing (China) for vehicles sold in the domestic market.

In addition to two battery plants in Kamenz (Germany) already producing battery systems for Mercedes-Benz, the company plans a future battery plant at the Sindelfingen site, increasing capacity already available from the nearby Untertürkheim plants in preparation for locally built electric models.

Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz is upgrading the Jawor (Poland) battery plant, currently manufacturing battery packs for plug-in hybrid variants of the C,E and S-Classes, to include battery systems for upcoming EQ models, as well as planning a battery plant in the vicinity of the Tuscaloosa Alabama factory.

15 December 2020, Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz is targeting leadership in electric drives and vehicle software. The consistent electrification of the entire product portfolio is a key element of the strategic focus "Ambition 2039" and a prerequisite on the way to CO₂ neutrality. In 2022 the portfolio includes eight all-electric Mercedes-EQ models. The global Mercedes-Benz production network is ready for the company’s electric product offensive and is integrating its Mercedes-EQ models into series production in its existing plants.

The EQS, the first electric luxury sedan from Mercedes-Benz, will start in the first half of 2021 in Factory 56 at the Sindelfingen site (Germany). With the production launch of the electric compact SUV EQA at the Rastatt plant (Germany) and the current decision to locate EQB production in the Hungarian plant in Kecskemét, the company is taking further important steps toward making its product portfolio CO₂ neutral. The course has also been set toward “Electric First” in the global powertrain production network as well. High-efficiency battery systems will also be manufactured and assembled within the production network.

Mercedes-Benz vehicle plants consistently implement electric offensive

 

In May 2019 production of the EQC (combined power consumption: 21.5 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen (Germany) was integrated into ongoing series production. Just a few months later the German-Chinese production joint venture, Beijing Benz Automotive Co. Ltd. (BBAC), launched EQC production for the local market in China. In 2020 production of the EQV premium electric MPV (combined power consumption: 26.4 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km)1  started in Vitoria, northern Spain.

 

Compact car class customers can look forward to two fully electric compact SUVs in the EQA and EQB in 2021. EQA will celebrate its world premiere on January, 20 2021 as the first fully electric derivative of this compact car. The EQA production launch at the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant went smoothly. As with the EQC from Bremen and Beijing and the EQV from Vitoria, which are already on the market, the fully electric models at the Rastatt plant run on the same production line as compact vehicles with conventional and hybrid drives. That means all five vehicles produced in Rastatt are electrified: In addition to the fully electric EQA, the AClass, A-Class sedan, B-Class and the compact SUV GLA are also produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt - with classic combustion engines as well as plug-in hybrid drive. With that the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant is making an important contribution on the road to a CO₂ neutral vehicle fleet and to the Mercedes-Benz AG electric offensive. EQA production will also follow next year (2021) at BBAC in Beijing for the Chinese market.

 

EQB production will launch in 2021 at two locations in the global Mercedes-Benz Cars production network: in the Hungarian Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét for the world market and in the German-Chinese joint venture BBAC in Beijing for the local market. Plant preparation, including employee training and renovation work, is already underway. The compact SUV EQB will be the first purely electrically powered production vehicle from Hungary and will complement the plug-in hybrid portfolio consisting of the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake. The A-Class will also be produced in Kecskemét with a plug-in hybrid drive, in addition to production in the German Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt.

 

Furthermore, in the first half of 2021 production of the EQS electric luxury sedan will begin in Factory 56 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen (Germany). EQS is the independent, fully electric member in the new S-Class program and is the first to use the new electric architecture for luxury and upper-class electric vehicles at Mercedes-Benz. In Factory 56 the S-Class and, in the future, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, and the EQS will be produced in a fully flexible manner on the same line. Factory 56 embodies the future of production at Mercedes-Benz and sets new standards for automobile construction. In Factory 56 efficiency gains of around 25 percent are achieved compared to the previous S-Class assembly. Furthermore, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen will begin production of the EQE business sedan in the second half of 2021, followed shortly thereafter at the Beijing plant. The EQE thus complements the allelectric portfolio of the two plants. The Beijing plant will then produce a total of four Mercedes-EQ models for the local market.

 

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa (USA) is also preparing for production of the EQE SUV and EQS SUV in 2022, which will be produced in the future on the same line with SUVs with conventional and plug-in hybrid drives.

 

In 2022 a total of eight Mercedes-EQ electric vehicles will be produced at seven locations on three continents. This is possible because the company made early investments worldwide in flexibility and technical equipment with future-oriented Industry 4.0 solutions. In the Mercedes-Benz AG plants, vehicles with different drive types can be produced in parallel thanks to highly flexible structures. With a view to the strategic goal of generating more than half of sales with so-called xEVs, i.e. plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, from 2030 on and gradually increasing the purely electric share, the high degree of flexibility is a decisive advantage. It enables production to be adjusted at short notice depending on market demand.

 

smart rounds off the electric Mercedes-Benz Cars portfolio with three additional models. The smart EQ fortwo (combined power consumption: 16.5 kWh/100 km, combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km)1 and smart EQ fortwo Cabrio (combined power consumption: 16.8 kWh/100 km, CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km)1 are produced in Hambach, France, and the smart EQ forfour (combined power consumption: 17.3 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km)1 in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. The next generation of smart electric vehicles will be produced by the joint venture smart Automobile Co., Ltd. in China. This is a joint venture of MercedesBenz AG and the Zhejiang Geely Group (Geely Holding).

 

Plug-in hybrid drive is important as a key technology and intermediate step toward a purely electric product portfolio. More than 20 plug-in hybrid model variants are already an integral part of the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio. The portfolio will be expanded to include more than 25 model variants by 2025. Their production therefore also plays an important role in the global production network. Plug-in hybrid vehicles are already rolling off Mercedes-Benz Cars assembly lines in almost all car plants.

 

Global battery production network: a key success factor in the Mercedes-Benz electric offensive

 

The batteries for the Mercedes-EQ electric vehicles are supplied by a global battery production network with plants on three continents. Local battery production is a key success factor for the Mercedes-Benz electric offensive. 

 

Two plants in Kamenz (Germany), have been producing battery systems for hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles since 2012. The second battery factory at the site began operations in 2018 and has been producing the EQC's battery systems since 2019. It was designed from the start as a CO₂ neutral plant and combines, among other things, solar energy, geothermal energy and a combined heat and power plant. The battery systems for the EQA have also recently rolled off the production line at the site. Since the start of production at Accumotive, more than a million batteries based on lithium-ion technology for electric, plug-in hybrid vehicles and 48-volt systems have been produced at the Kamenz site. 

 

Mercedes-Benz and BAIC have jointly set up local battery production at the existing location in the Yizhuang Industrial Park in Beijing (China). This supplies the nearby vehicle plant, which has also added all-electric Mercedes-EQ models to its portfolio with the EQC. Production of battery systems for the EQC started there in 2019. With the start of production of the EQA, EQB and EQE, the plant will manufacture battery systems for a total of four Mercedes-Benz EQ models beginning in 2021.

 

This year the battery plant in Jawor (Poland) started producing plug-in hybrid batteries for the C, E and SClasses. In the coming year the location will expand its portfolio to include battery systems for the compact Mercedes-EQ models, the EQA and the EQB. Much like the battery plant in Kamenz, the plant was designed from the outset for CO₂ neutral production.

 

In the future at the Untertürkheim (Germany) site two plants will produce battery systems. Final preparations for the production of the battery systems for the EQS, which will roll off the production line in nearby Sindelfingen in the first half of 2021, are currently underway at the Hedelfingen plant. The battery system for the EQE will also be produced in Hedelfingen. Another battery plant is currently being built in the Brühl facility, which will manufacture battery systems for Mercedes-Benz plug-in hybrids starting 2022. The work on the building has already been completed. The battery plant in Brühl will be fitted with the corresponding equipment in the coming months.

 

Production of the EQS and EQE SUV models will start in 2022 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa (USA). A battery plant is currently being built in the immediate vicinity and will supply highly efficient battery systems for both models. Work on the building has already been completed. The ultra-modern systems will be installed in the coming months.

 

In addition, the Mercedes-Benz production strategy currently provides for another battery plant at the Sindelfingen site.

 

Together with local partner Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant (TAAP), Mercedes-Benz Cars set up a battery production facility in Bangkok (Thailand) and began operations in 2019. Battery systems for the current C, E and S-Class plug-in hybrids are manufactured at the site. Preparations are also being made there to manufacture drive batteries for all-electric Mercedes-EQ brand vehicles.

 

Electric First und Ambition2039: CO₂ neutral mobility und production

 

Under “Electric First,” Mercedes-Benz is pursuing the consistent electrification of all model variants and vehicle types as a clear objective. The decisive factor here over the next few years is the gradual increase in the purely electric share of the vehicle portfolio. So-called xEVs, plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles, should account for more than half of sales by 2030 - and the trend is rising. Electrically powered vehicles from Mercedes-Benz are enjoying increasing popularity. The company delivered a total of 45,000 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids (xEVs) worldwide in the third quarter of 2020.

 

With “Ambition2039,” Mercedes-Benz introduced its path to CO₂ neutrality over a year ago. Vehicle production plays a crucial role in this regard. As early as 2022 the company’s Mercedes-Benz car and van plants will produce CO₂ neutrally around the world. This includes more than 30 car and van plants, as well as battery plants.

Mr. Burzer, are you equipped for the production of electric vehicles in your production network?

The Mercedes-EQ production network is ready for our electric offensive. We started this transformation several years ago and set up our plants with maximum flexibility. The Mercedes-EQ electric models are gradually being integrated into our existing vehicle plants worldwide. They come off the same lines as vehicles with combustion engines or plug-in hybrid drives. The same applies to all of our Mercedes-Benz car plants - a total of six on three continents. This concept is particularly advantageous because demand for electric and electrified vehicles is developing very differently by region and we can adjust our production planning accordingly on short notice. In this way we can manufacture exactly what our customers want.

 

What specifically does your production planning for the upcoming model offensive look like?

One thing is certain: the proportion of all-electric vehicles in our portfolio will increase sharply in the coming years. By 2030 more than fifty percent of our vehicles will roll off the assembly line as so-called xEVs. Plug-in hybrids and hybrids will therefore continue to play an important role in our production planning over the next few years. However, our target is clearly designed for 100 percent Mercedes-EQ and we are directing our capacity precisely in this direction. We are preparing our production, as well as our employees, step by step for this change. Our sustainability concept is also a central focus: from 2022 on we will produce CO₂ neutral in our Mercedes-Benz plants worldwide.

 

What, specifically, were the challenges?

Every vehicle launch during ongoing production comes with challenges. That, of course, also applies to electric vehicles. However, thanks to the know-how in our plants and cross-location system planning, we could quickly develop and implement flexible solutions. The consistent digitalization of our processes through our digital production ecosystem MO360 also made a significant contribution. An important factor here, of course, is attaining targeted qualifications for our colleagues in our plants, which we consistently promote.

 

How will powertrain production continue in the future?

For the global Mercedes-Benz powertrain production network, the shift toward e-mobility poses a special challenge. However, we are determined to continue aligning our drive division to this change and make it sustainable for the future. We have already built up extensive know-how in our powertrain plants in recent years. It starts with the expansion of our battery production network and includes, among other things, manufacturing and assembling parts of the electric drivetrain ourselves. Still, it’s also clear that the drivetrains of the future will differ significantly from those of today.

 

You will manufacture the batteries for the Mercedes-EQ models in house?

The local production of batteries is an essential success factor in our electric offensive. With a view to steadily increasing demand and, in accordance with our production planning, we are setting up our global battery production network to be flexible worldwide. Today we already produce batteries in Kamenz, Bangkok and Beijing. The ramp-up of our battery plants in Hedelfingen and Jawor is imminent and our colleagues in Brühl and Tuscaloosa are already preparing to start production in 2022. Our production network is very well positioned for the Mercedes-EQ model offensive.

 

Which new electric model are you personally most looking forward to?

Basically, I look forward to every new Mercedes-Benz. A very special milestone is certainly the upcoming EQS production launch. It will roll off the assembly line, together with the S-Class, in our new Factory 56 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen. Here we’re setting the course for our entire production network: With the most modern production technologies Factory 56 is a blueprint for our global network. At the same time, it bolsters our claim - the Mercedes way - to the production of the Mercedes-EQ models: completely digital and flexible, highly efficient and maximally sustainable.
