BMW ix1 set for Australian launch from $82,900 - could this be the best BMW SUV?
The BMW ix1 will start from $82,900 plus on-road costs in Australia - good value in our eyes for premium SUV with around 400km of real-world range, plentiful standard equipment and sub-six second 0-100 km/h figures. Can it lure buyers from Tesla’s desirable Model Y?
The BMW x1 was first introduced in 2009 as a subcompact SUV, and over the last 12 years, over one million vehicles have been produced. The first all-electric iX1 will be based on the company’s FAAR platform (think 1-series, 2-series, X1 and X2 models) which is a flexible architecture designed for front-wheel drive combustion, hybrid and electric drivetrains.

While the iX1 “only” charges at a peak of 130kW when plugged into a DC fast charger, this should still be enough to replenish 10-80% of range in around 30 minutes. Like with the iX3 and iX battery electric vehicles, BMW Australia provides a 3 year complimentary Chargefox DC fast charging subscription.
Should customers have access to 3-phase power, the iX1 will charge at up to 22kW on AC electricity. The iX1 will offer connectivity to the My BMW App - something that is now expected from EVs on sale. The app will allow the remote setting of climate control, as well as managing charging timers, and pre-entering navigation destinations in the vehicle.

The BMW iX1 xDrive30: first information on entry-level Premium EV SUV
BMW enters the electric premium SUV category with the iX1 xDrive30, and has Tesla, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo in its sights. we expect to see the iX1 in Australia in Q1 2023.
BMW continues its electrified product push, revealing the iX1 SUV. Based on the automaker’s flexible architecture which underpins combustion, hybrid and fully electric models, the iX1 xDrive30 offers impressive performance figures and stats. This isn’t your entry level BMW any more; expect a premium price to justify the iX1’s offerings:

The iX1 xDrive30 will join the BMW i4, iX3 and iX in the model range, and is the first premium compact SUV from the brand. We anticipate it will go head to head with the Tesla Model Y, Mercedes-Benz EQA and EQB, and the Volvo XC 40 Recharge; all strong value propositions.
There’s a 68 kWh battery - smaller than the 80 kWh unit fitted to the iX3. The iX1 weighs a relatively athletic 1,800kg - 450kg lighter than the iX3 but should still offer plenty of space, comfort and convenience for passengers.
Rapid DC charging peaks at 130 kW, and will take around 29 minutes to charge from 10 -> 80 percent. Single phase 7 kW AC charging will see the same charge take around 10 hours. BMW quotes a WLTP range of between 413 – 438 km.
The interior of the iX1 retains familiar BMW design cues; the three-spoke steering wheel, dual “floating” screen setup and familiar i-Drive system are all present, but the automaker has added what appears to be a new style of drive controller in the raised central arm rest. There’s wireless phone charging, leather, upholstery, and an animal-free Sensatec trim option.
According to Australian BMW dealers, pricing has yet to be confirmed, however customers are able to place a deposit on the iX1 to secure a position in the queue. We expect a launch edition of the iX1 to appear in Australia late in 2022, with customer vehicles due in Q1 2023.
Subaru USA announces 2023 Solterra electric SUV pricing
Subaru’s first all-electric SUV starts from $44,995 in the US, and will be available in all 50 states from summer 2022.

Subaru of America, Inc. have announced the pricing for the 2023 Subaru Solterra. Underneath the bodywork, the Solterra is a twin of Toyota’s bZ4x, and will go on sale this coming summer.
Pricing begins at $44,995 MSRP for the Premium trim level, before a potential Federal tax credit of up to $7,500. The Limited trim starts from an MSRP of $48,495. The top-of-the-line Touring trim is priced from $51,995. The destination and delivery charge for the 2023 Solterra is $1,225.10.
Solterra comes standard with a new Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system (the same as in the top-specification Toyota bZ4x) that Subaru claims to provide outstanding traction and capability in all kinds of weather and terrain. The Solterra SUV delivers a total of 215 horsepower (160 kW) and 249 lb.-ft. (337Nm) of torque from front and rear electric motors.
According to Subaru, “Solterra’s high-capacity lithium-ion battery pack provides plenty of daily range”. The reality is not looking great however; with around 220 miles (354km) of EPA range, the Solterra charges its 71.4 kWh battery at a maximum rate of 100kW. These days, most mainstream EVs peak at 150kW as a bare minimum.

Solterra Premium
The Solterra Premium has a value driven starting price of $44,995 and comes with heated front seats and exterior mirrors; windshield wiper de-icer; 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels paired with 235/60 R18 tires; 7-inch LCD gauge display; Automatic Climate Control with S-FLOW; Rear Seat Reminder; and LED headlights (multi-beam low and single beam high).
The Premium trim comes standard with an all-new multimedia system featuring an 8-inch high-resolution touchscreen; smartphone integration with wireless Apple CarPlay®, wireless Android™ Auto; AM/FM HD stereo; SiriusXM All-Access Radio (4-month audio trial subscription); integrated streaming (30-day free trial); and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio. A wireless charging phone dock for the center console is also available as an accessory.
The Premium also includes Blind Spot Monitor; Rear Camera Detection with Pedestrian Warning; and Parking Support Brake (PKSB) and Safe Exit Assist.
Power door locks, power exterior mirrors, and power windows with one-touch auto up/down are included. The vehicle charge port on the left front fender includes a power lock and automatic charging cable lock. The center console is equipped with five USB ports including a USB A input/charge port in the front, upper section; (dual) USB C charge ports in the front, lower section; (dual) USB C charge ports in the rear.
Solterra Limited
The Solterra Limited starts at $48,495 and includes all the standard equipment from the Premium and adds the all-new multimedia system featuring a 12.3-inch high-resolution horizontal touchscreen; smartphone integration with wireless Apple CarPlay®, wireless Android™ Auto; AM/FM HD stereo; SiriusXM All-Access Radio (4-month free subscription); integrated streaming (30-day free subscription); Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio; and available cloud-based navigation system (one-year free subscription). A wireless charging phone dock in the center console is also standard on Limited. There’s also a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor with Advanced Park auto parking system.
The Limited also adds comfort and convenience features including a 10-way power driver’s seat; heated rear seats (outboard positions); heated steering wheel; Harman Kardon premium audio system; LED fog lights; power rear door with automatic close and height memory; rain-sensing wiper system; and roof rails. The Limited comes standard with a roof spoiler (split) and 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels paired with 235/50R 20 all-season tires.
Solterra Touring
The Touring trim level, with a starting price of $51,995, includes all the standard equipment of the Limited, plus a digital rear-new mirror with view position adjustment and HomeLink®; ventilated front seats; panoramic moonroof with power sunshade; and front and rear LED footwell lighting. The Touring trim also has a two-tone exterior paint option.
Charging the Subaru Solterra with EVgo
SOA has partnered with EVgo to provide customers with access to a public charging network of more than 46,000 locations across the U.S. This includes access to 800+ public fast charging locations and 1,200+ Level 2 charging stalls across 35 states. EVgo is also powered by 100% renewable energy. Solterra reservation holders will receive a Charging Choice Offer in anticipation of their upcoming vehicle delivery. Subaru will also apparently provide an offer for reservation holders including a EVgo Charging Credit or money towards the purchase and installation of a Home Level 2 Charger by QMerit.
For potential customers Down Under, Subaru Australia accidentally published a line on its website last week stating that the new Solterra will be available in 2023. The company has refused to confirm this however. A 2023 launch seems plausible, and the Solterra is expected to go head-to-head with Skoda’s ENYAQ IV, the Volkswagen ID.4 and Toyota bZ4X.

In a design sense, is the new MG ZS EV the lovechild of the Hyundai Kona EV and Ford Mustang Mach-E? Whatever you think about the aesthetics of MG’s updated electric crossover, it’s a fresh and welcome change from the understated, quiet achiever that is the current ZS EV.
The changes are more than skin deep; the charging port is now offset to the drivers’ (in RHD markets) side, rather than behind the MG badge as on the current ZS EV. LED lighting clusters are now fitted front and rear, and on the inside, a brand new infotainment and navigation system is offered, as well as MG’s app-based software architecture known as iSmart. MG Australia claims iSmart will allow owners to perform over-the-air (OTA) updates, access real-time navigation and live weather updates. The company hasn’t said whether charging and interior climate control will also be available in app, similar to Tesla’s vehicles.
Greater range, larger batteries
The current MG ZS EV is a good car, but with a real world range of around 200-220km (125-137 miles), the vehicle is severely limited away from urban areas. MG plans to fix this, offering a 51 kWh (+6.5 kWh) variant, and a much larger 72 kWh variant. MG claims 320 km (198 miles) and 440 km (273 miles) range on the WLTP combined test cycle. Looking at our vehicle specifications sheet, that’s an additional 57 km range (35 miles) for the base model.
MG claims the ZS EV has sold over 15,000 units in Europe during its first year on sale, and according to Autocar, UK buyers will be able to purchase the updated ZS EV from November. MG Australia has told us that Australian deliveries will commence in the second half of 2022.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 Australian pricing announced, starting from $71,900 MLP
Prices start from $71,900 for the rear wheel drive variant, with standard equipment highlights including Vehicle to Load (V2L), zero-gravity seats, smart cruise control, 20-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, and a panoramic sunroof.
[Update] 22/9/21: Hyundai Australia has confirmed to EV Brief that some features, such as a smaller 19-inch wheel option and the head-up display with augmented reality will not be available at launch, but the company aims to bring them to Australia for model year 2022.

Competitive pricing for a large crossover
Let’s start with the dollars. Already, within minutes of the press embargo being lifted, the internet has been ablaze with comments such as “Why is the IONIQ 5 twelve grand more than a Tesla Model 3?” The answer to this question lies in the size of the thing (it’s 3,000mm wheelbase is longer than a Range Rover’s) and the technology and inclusions.
Firstly, if you wish to purchase one of these, you’re going to have to bypass your local Hyundai dealer, and jump on Hyundai Australia’s website. The Australian arm of the company says that “The initial batch of IONIQ 5 EVs will be ordered and sold online directly to customers.”, leaving open the prospect that dealers may in fact get a piece of the action at a later date.
Hyundai Australia has received 120 confirmed deposits from prospective customers, and those buyers will have the opportunity to place an order online from September 27. From 12 October, any customer who has registered their interest will be given early access to place an order. The general public can put their hard-earned down from October 13.

What makes the IONIQ 5 so special?
We believe the IONIQ 5 is a game-changer on the Australian market; sure, it may be lacking Tesla’s over-the-air updates and built-in arcade games, but there’s a lot to offer for Australians looking to make the switch to zero-emissions transport.
Firstly, its size. Australians love crossovers and SUVs; they make up fifty percent of the new car market down under. The IONIQ 5 bridges the gap between SUV and station wagon, offering the interior space of a much larger vehicle, without the bulk - or the downsides - of an SUV.
Charging is another game-changer. Australians love to travel stupid distances (I’ve driven 7 to 800 km (430-500 miles) in a day more times than I’d like to admit) and while our charging infrastructure has a lot of holes, it is certainly increasing in ubiquity.
The IONIQ 5 will charge from 10 to 80 percent in 6 hours on a standard type-2 AC charger, 56 min on a 50 kW DC fast charger, and 18 minutes on a 350 kW DC fast charger. Those numbers are exceptional, and what’s more, the charging speed doesn’t fall off a cliff if the battery isn’t near-zero unlike a number of other EVs.
The IONIQ 5’s other highlight is its standard Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, meaning that customers can plug regular household appliances into the exterior outlet, or even charge another EV. Perfect for powering a laptop, a camping fridge, and more.
Hyundai Australia has also done well to secure the standard equipment listed, a lot of which is optionally available in other markets. The IONIQ 5 features laminated acoustic side glass, ‘relaxation’ zero-gravity seats, remote start/parking, Hyundai’s excellent blind spot view monitor, 20-inch alloy wheels, 3d surround-view camera and smart cruise control.
There are however, a few omissions for Australian buyers. The interior V2L outlet is missing in Australia; a big disappointment personally. As someone who does a lot of video editing on the road, I’d love to be able to power a laptop internally. Other items missing from our specification sheet are the Digital Side Mirrors, heat pump, and solar sunroof. Full specifications are listed below.
What colours can I choose for the IONIQ 5?
Australians will have the choice of 5 standard and one extra-cost paint finish initially. Atlas White and Phantom Black Mica are available with the Obsidian Black interior, while Digital Teal Green Mica and Lucid Blue Mica are available with the Dove Grey/Dark Pebble Grey interior. Galactic Grey Metallic is available with the Dove Grey/Dark Teal interior trim, as is the extra-cost hero colour, Gravity Gold Matte.
The IONIQ 5 is on EV Brief's shopping list, and we can’t wait to actually drive it — and its Kia EV6 sibling next year — to see if the on-road experience is as next-generation as the technology and exterior styling. Hyundai Australia says deliveries are expected to begin arriving in the fourth quarter.

Genesis reveals official images of E-GMP based GV60 electric crossover
Genesis has released official images of the new GV60 all electric crossover today, less than a week after we caught a prototype testing in Sydney, Australia. Based on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform (which we seem to be writing about every other day on this site), The GV60 is an upmarket version of Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 and Kia’s EV6.

Exterior Styling of the GV60
Let’s start on the outside of the GV60, because the design language is quite radical. Sure, there’s the double-slit head and tail lamps that are familiar visual cues from other Genesis models, but the GV60 looks nothing like other vehicles from the brand’s range.
Certainly less brute-ish and more futuristic than the GV70 and GV90 petrol SUVs, the GV60 echoes the Kia EV6’s “sporty crossover coupe” design language, with a sloping clamshell hood, long wheelbase, and high, raked rear end.
A frontal grille-like area dominates the nose of the GV60, however the majority of the blacked-out structure is closed off for improved aerodynamics. A coloured ring defines the front, dividing the black grille into two portions, the lower of which mimics the shape of a modern aircraft’s wings, complete with winglets.
Contrasting arches and lower mouldings define the lower structure of the GV60, and give that off-road appearance, though we expect the higher specification models to feature body-coloured paintwork on these trim pieces.
The glasshouse area is very similar to Kia’s EV6 in our minds, but the sharp wedge in the C-pillar is an attention grabbing design element. The large rear-glass area, ducktail spoiler with integrated LED brake light, and squared-off rear remind us of a cross between Mercedes-Benz’s GLE Coupe, and a Baja Beetle (call us crazy!)
The wheels on the GV60 in the media release are the same 21” design as fitted to the prototype we spotted last week.
Genesis presents its next generation of interior luxury
While the lime green exterior/blue interior may not be to everybody’s tastes, there’s an undeniable luxury to the interior of the GV60. Again there’s a familiarity here from Kia and Hyundai’s siblings - the dual-screen setup, the placement of important switchgear, and the floating centre console, but Genesis has clearly overhauled the interior architecture to suit its market positioning.
Firstly, there’s the digital side mirrors that we’ve seen from Korean and European market Hyundai IONIQ 5s, which almost certainly won’t make it to the USA or Australia just yet. The seats appear to be a high-grade nappa leather (we hope to see an animal-free interior option too), and there’s leather or fake leather with contrasting stitching adorning the dash, armrests, and upper door cards. The climate control setup receives a larger screen the the IONIQ 5, and pleasingly, there are a number of physical buttons present. The same goes for the steering wheel; Genesis has opted for actual buttons, rather than touch-sensitive items. There’s a drive mode button and boost button, likely to provide an additional hit of torque for a limited period, similar to Porsche’s Taycan.
All the switchgear is metallic, or at least in a metallic finish, and the textured knurling on these elements is a lovely, tactile touch that evokes a Bentley’s interior. In fact, call us crazy, but Genesis appears to be aiming to create an interior that offers a lot of similarities to something coming out of Crewe, at a much more pocket friendly pricepoint.
The IONIQ 5’s storage drawer remains, and there’s a floating centre console, which appears to be fixed. This design still allows for plenty of storage, and a flat passenger footwell. Atop the console is a wireless charging pad, media controller, and Genesis’ “Crystal Sphere” Shift By Wire drive controller. Genesis states that this controller becomes the vehicle’s mood lights before the GV60 is started, creating a pleasing interior atmosphere, and a little bit of theatre as the orb rotates and glows prior to powering on.

While Genesis has yet to publish drivetrain information, as stated in our previous article, we know that the company has had three variants certified under Korea’s Noise and Emissions Certification process.

At this stage, it’s unclear which models are destined for foreign markets, but we’re certainly excited to finally see the GV60 uncovered in any case. While the design may not be to everyone’s tastes, We’ll have to wait until images of different colours and specification grades are made available, before passing judgement. Hopefully we’ll be able to catch a look at a pre-production version later this year, before the crossover goes on sale sometime in 2022.

This year’s winner was chosen from an initial entry list of 24 vehicles from all over the world, then a short list of three finalists as announced on March 30, 2021. The Top Three in the World finalists for 2021 also included another EV, the Honda e, and the Toyota Yaris.
To be eligible for the World Car of the Year award, vehicles must be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units/year, must be priced below the luxury-car level in their primary markets, and must be “on-sale” in at least two major markets, on at least two separate continents, between May 1, 2020 and May 1, 2021.
This win should help Volkswagen justify the billions spent on its shift to electro-mobility and assist the company in forgetting the ‘Dieselgate’ era. We’re certainly excited to see more competition in the marketplace, especially in the form of EVs from one of the world’s largest automakers, but Volkswagen still has some issues to iron out if it is to truly achieve mass-market adoption of its zero emissions vehicles.
EV teardown expert Sandy Munro stated that Tesla need not worry about competition from the ID.4 after comprehensively examining VW’s newest EV, and Engineering Explained showed that there are issues with charging the ID.4, even on the DC fast charging network established by Volkswagen, Electrify America.

Taking its ‘BZ’ moniker from the concept of ‘Beyond Zero’ emissions, The BZ4X carries familiar toyota design elements, wrapped in a shape that mimics Kia’s EV6 in its cab-backward squared-off look. Based on the e-TNGA platform co-developed with Subaru, all wheel drive (AWD) variants of the BZ4X will utilise Subaru’s proven AWD technology.
Of course while many people were quick to herald the arrival of the BZ4X Concept as a Hyundai and Kia challenger, Toyota has released very limited information on the car, preferring to wax lyrical about the company’s planned EV rollout over the next decade.
Speaking of, Toyota plans to expand to its model lineup to around 70 electrified vehicles globally by 2025, however this includes non-plug-in hybrids powered by combustion engines. Toyota has labeled its/Lexus’s hybrids as ‘self-charging’ in a jab at BEV owners having to stop to charge; a dishonest description of the technology. Norway has even banned this advertising language, calling it “misleading consumer practice”.
The company plans 15 dedicated BEVs, including seven carrying the bZ (Beyond Zero) brand moniker. In addition, Toyota intends to bring electrification to its pickup truck lineup in the near future, including hybrid and BEV powertrains.
Toyota continues to hedge its bets on vehicle technology, committing to internal combustion, hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric vehicle development.. Toyota Australia vice-president of sales and marketing Sean Hanley stated: “Our approach reiterates Toyota Australia's absolute commitment to reducing its CO2 footprint and the adoption of new technologies across our extensive range of vehicles, whilst recognising the different practical needs of Australian customers and geographies”
We’d have to question Toyota’s approach; with most major global auto manufacturers facing declining sales revenue, increasing operating costs and capital expenditure, and strict emissions controls across China, North America and Europe over the coming decade, many manufacturers such as General Motors, Volkswagen and Volvo are settling on Battery Electric Vehicle technology. It’s unlikely that any one company —even one as big as Toyota — can afford to back three different propulsion technologies in the medium-to-long term.

Rivian partners with Samsung SDI in electric truck battery deal
American electric vehicle startup Rivian announced today that it had reached a successful deal with South Korea’s Samsung SDI Co Limited to supply battery cells for its R1T and R1S electric trucks.

“We’re excited about the performance and reliability of Samsung SDI battery cells combined with our energy-dense module and pack design,” said RJ Scaringe, chief executive officer of Rivian.
Samsung SDI currently has battery supply deals with BMW and Volkswagen, estimated to each be valued around $3-4 billion US over 10 years. The value and terms of the Rivian deal is undisclosed, and it is unclear whether the deal also includes batteries for the company’s electric delivery vans.
Rivian is planning to start production of its R1T and R1S models by mid-2021, and is backed by some big players, including the Ford Motor Company and Amazon.com Inc. The automaker recently announced a successful funding round led by T. Rowe Price, raising $2.65 billion US.
It’s obviously going to be a big year for Rivian, but it could get bigger; the company is likely planning an Initial Public Offering (IPO) later in 2021. Bloomberg reported in February that Rivian is in talks with banks.
A number of EV startups have made the leap to publicly traded companies recently via reverse mergers with shell companies known as special purpose acquisition companies (SPAC). These include Xpeng, Nikola Motors, Lordstown and Canoo. It’s also expected by some analysts that Lucid Motors will go down this route.

Audi’s Q4 E-Tron is an important vehicle for the Ingolstadt manufacturer, as it is the first mid-size SUV based on the new modular electric MEB architecture. Again, the automaker has teased plenty of information and images of the Q4 E-Tron, but we can’t wait to see final specifications, colour and trim options. The Q4 E-Tron will go head-to-head with BMW’s iX3 and Tesla’s Model Y, but also with new competitors in the compact to mid-size SUV category. This is the first time South Korean manufacturers are competing in the premium segment with genuinely innovative, class-leading vehicles in the form of Kia’s EV6 and Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 , and we would expect many buyers to be seriously cross-shopping these vehicles when they hit the market.

Jeep announces 4xe Charging Network to provide EV charging stations
Hot on the heels of Rivian’s announcement of the Rivian Adventure Network, Jeep has partnered with Electrify America to roll out level 2 EV charging stations at Jeep Badge of Honor off-road trailheads around the United States.

The launch of these trailhead chargers coincide with the launch of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid model, and the company states that they will support future fully electric Jeep models. Jeep 4xe charging stations are initially scheduled to open this spring at three of the most-popular off-road sites and icons for the Jeep brand – Moab, Utah; the Rubicon Trail in Pollock Pines, California; and Big Bear, California.
“Electrification opens a new chapter in the Jeep brand story, and it brings an entirely new level of excitement and enjoyment for our enthusiastic owners,” said Christian Meunier, Jeep Brand Chief Executive Officer – Stellantis. “Key to making Jeep brand the greenest SUV brand is assuring our owners can enjoy the benefits of electric propulsion wherever they go, including the most iconic off-road trails in the country.”
Jeep is working with leading public charging network Electrify America to establish the trailhead charging sites and install the charging equipment. Jeep 4xe owners will be able to login to unlock free charging via a custom mobile app by Electrify America, which also allows drivers to initiate and monitor their charging session.
“It is our goal to provide electric vehicle drivers with the freedom to get to where they want to go – whether it be on a highway or off-road – and we look forward to bringing Jeep enthusiasts along on the journey,” said Giovanni Palazzo, president and chief executive officer of Electrify America. “Through the customizable electric vehicle charging offerings of our Electrify Commercial B2B brand, we were able to work with Jeep to identify where their drivers will need charging access most, and make it a reality.”
The Jeep 4xe Charging Network trailhead chargers will deliver Level 2 (240-volt) charging, meaning the 17 kilowatt-hour battery pack in the Jeep Wrangler 4xe can be fully recharged in about two hours, delivering up to 21 miles (33 km) of electric range.
The 4xe charging stations will be either directly connected to the power grid or use solar power to generate electricity, though the company has not stated exactly how much power will be generated by renewables.
We’re not certain how many hybrid Jeep owners would bother to plug in to charge while they’re off-roading or hiking, but it’s a small gesture towards Jeep’s—and Stellantis’—all electric future.
Vietnam's VinFast discussing potential EV battery and components deal with Apple supplier Foxconn
Vietnam's largest conglomerate Vingroup confirmed on Friday that its automotive subsidiary VinFast was in early stage talks with the Foxconn Technology Group about working together and that any partnership formed would focus on developing batteries and electric car parts.

"Vingroup has received proposals from Foxconn but nothing is concrete yet. The partnership, if any, will focus on developing the batteries and electric car parts," a spokesman for Vingroup said. "No decision on working together to produce EVs has been made yet."
According to Reuters, Foxconn has put forward a proposal to VinFast to acquire their EV production lines, However VinFast would prefer a partnership as it remains keen to keep and grow its EV business.
Foxconn naturally declined to comment, however chairman Liu Young-Way also stated that the company may consider producing electric vehicles at its Wisconsin, USA plant, or look to setting up production facilities in Mexico. Liu described Foxconn as the "new kid in town" for vehicle manufacturing, and said the company needs to quickly build up its capacity to earn trust from clients.
Foxconn has been the world’s largest contract manufacturer for OEM’s for a few years now, and has openly stated that it has ambitions to shake up the automotive industry, but offering startup and established players alike a shortcut to competing in the electric vehicles market.
There’s no reason to expect that this can’t happen; Foxconn has moved quickly to establish deals with companies like Fisker and Byton. Recently Foxconn successfully established a deal with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group to provide contract manufacturing.
Vinfast is the automotive arm of Vingroup, Vietnam’s largest conglomerate consisting of 48 subsidiary companies across real estate development, retail services, education, network security, healthcare and of course automotive manufacturing. The group has a combined estimated 50,000 employees, and a turnover in 2019 of 100 trillion VND - approximately $4.3 billion USD. Vinfast recently set up a research and devlopment arm in Australia, based in Melbourne.
The company sold around 30,000 vehicles in 2020, and plans to increase that by 50% in 2021. VinFast’s electric vehicle offerings are expected to begin hitting the domestic Vietnamese market by December 2021.

Rivian plans US EV charging network comprising private DC and public AC charging sites
Rivian has announced ambitions plans to rollout its Rivian Adventure Network, a charging network designed to help Rivian R1S and R1T customers get to and from outdoor adventure locations across the United States, including Alaska and Hawai’i.

Rivian is aiming to install 3,500+ DC fast chargers at 600+ sites by the end of 2023 along popular highway routes in the United States, for the exclusive use of its customers. In a move that mimics Tesla’s proprietary Supercharger network, the Rivian Adventure Network allows automatic charging without the need for access cards or payment devices, is powered by 100% renewable energy, and can theoretically charge at over 200kW.
In addition, Rivian plans to install over 10,0000 “Waypoint” Level 2 J1772-plug AC chargers at popular destinations like State and National Parks, shopping centres and restaurants. These chargers offer an 11.5kW charging speed, and will be open to non-Rivian EV owners.
Regarding the environmental impact of the power provided, Rivian states that “Through partnerships with electricity providers, we will use wind and solar wherever possible, as well as Renewable Energy Certificates to ensure your vehicle is powered with clean electricity.”
This week, the company announced that all 42 Colorado State Parks will feature two level 2 Rivian Waypoints each, with installation commencing in July. In-vehicle navigation will be able to route customers to the nearest Rivian Adventure Network charge point, and the Rivian app will provide real-time charging information.
The Launch Edition R1T, in Launch Green is expected to begin customer deliveries in the US by August 2021.
MG reveals next generation EVs; Marvel R Electric crossover set for May 2022 European launch [Updated]

However, it's not on the cards for Australia at the moment."
MG Motor has pulled the covers off its Marvel R Electric SUV this week. Self-described by the company as “a high-tech, luxurious ‘lifestyle’ SUV for the C-segment”, the Marvel R Electric is essentially an export-version carbon copy of sister SAIC brand Roewe’s Marvel R.
This “R” sub-brand was conceived to promote higher-end vehicles of a sportier design aesthetic, and these cars are marketed though a stand-alone dealer network in China.
The MG Marvel R Electric does indeed appear to be high-tech, with a tri-motor drivetrain (albeit with “only” 212 kW (288 PS). One can only assume that MG Motor has chosen a three motor setup—one of the front axel and two on the rear—so as to integrate smaller, more compact and efficient motor designs into its BEVs. The company has not provided a curb weight figure however.
The Marvel R Electric boasts a peak torque figure of 665 Nm, (490 lb ft) and a claimed 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 4.9 seconds. According to MG Motor’s press release, a rear-wheel-drive variant will also be available; presumably with a two-motor setup to accommodate a front trunk.
At 4,674 mm long with a 2,800mm wheelbase, 1,919 mm wide and 1,618 mm tall, The Marvel R Electric is slightly longer, and wider than Volkswagen’s ID.4 (4,585 mm long, 2,765 mm wheelbase, 1,852 mm width, 1,636 height)
The Marvel R Electric has a pleasingly contemporary appearance; one that is far removed from the traditional-yet-handsome ZS EV. Wide front and rear LED light strips—de rigueur these days it seems—dominate the design, and pleasing surface creases and aggressive vents give the Marvel R Electric some street appeal.
The interior is also a step up from the ZS EV, with soft touch materials across the doors and dashboard, metal-finish switchgear, a full LCD driver’s display measuring 12.3 inches and large vertically-mounted touchscreen of almost 20 inches—a la Tesla Model X and Mustang Mach-E—dominating the console.

MG Motor claims a WLTP range of over 400 kilometres, and although battery specifications haven’t been provided, it’s safe to assume that the MG will share Roewe’s 69.9 kWh gross battery capacity. There’s also 11kW AC charging on board, and DC charging that can achieve 80% SoC in 30 minutes. MG hasn’t provided a DC charging rate, but from the above figure we can assume it will be around 100-120kW.
The MG Marvel R Electric is expected to launch in Europe from May 2021. We have contacted MG Motor Australia about possible availability, and will update with their response.
MG5 Electric Wagon
Also not to be missed, was MG’s announcement of a facelift for its MG5 electric station wagon (or estate, or touring depending on where you reside).
This update brings a fresher face to the current version’s plain styling. Don’t dismiss the MG5 purely on aesthetic grounds however. A practical, spacious wagon with 578l trunk space priced from £24,495 (after Plug In Car Grant) helped the brand to strong UK sales in 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
The MG5 offers a similar 400 kilometre WLTP range to the Marvel R, and features a single drive motor with 135 kW (184 ps) and 280 Nm of torque. 11kW AC charging and high-speed DC charging are standard.
We can expect to see the MG5 Electric hitting the streets of Europe in October 2021.

BMW announces iX xDrive40, xDrive50 ahead of Q4 2021 Australian launch
BMW has today confirmed that it’s first-ever iX model line will reach Australian shores in 2021, in the form of the iX xDrive40 and iX xDrive50.
The BMW iX is currently undergoing its final phase of series development, and is the first model based on a new, modular and scalable toolkit which will underpin the brand’s future electric vehicles.
BMW has today confirmed that it’s first-ever iX model line will reach Australian shores in the fourth-quarter of 2021, in the form of the iX xDrive40 and iX xDrive50.
The BMW iX is currently undergoing its final phase of series development, and is the first model based on a new, modular and scalable toolkit which will underpin the brand’s future electric vehicles.
Full specifications are yet to be released, but BMW claims “In excess of” 370kW and 240kW developed by BMW iX xDrive50 and iX xDrive40 drive systems respectively, allowing 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) sprint times of five seconds for the iX xDrive50 and six seconds for the iX xDrive40.
The iX xDrive 50 will offer a WLTP range of more than 600km, and the xDrive40 a range of 500 km. BMW claims an energy consumption figure of less than 21kWh per 100 kilometres for both models.
While BMW hasn’t revealed full battery specifications, they have stated that the xDrive50 will have a gross energy content of “more than 100kWh” with 200kW charging, while the battery unit for the BMW iX xDrive40 has a gross energy content of “more than 70kWh” with 150kW charging.
In terms of technology, the iX range will debut BMW’s newest iteration of iDrive including BMW Operating System 8 which debuted this week.
BMW iX xDrive40 starts from £69,000 ($96,000 USD or $124,000 AUD) in the UK, so expect it to launch closer to $150,000 when it arrives in Australia later this year. It’s understood that BMW is working on an M motorsport-honed variant too. We will keep you updated as further details and pricing are released closer to launch.

There are four monotone and six two-tone options, and Nissan claims the paint portfolio was crafted to elevate Ariya’s premium look and feel.

The colours are applied by a highly advanced, environmentally sustainable paint production technology that reduces carbon dioxide output by 25% according to the company – further reducing the environmental footprint of this zero emission vehicle.
New colours for a new era of electrification
The design team developed Akatsuki Copper and Aurora Green especially for the all-electric coupé crossover. “The ingenuity the Nissan Ariya represents inspired us to adopt an entirely new mindset for colour design,” said Lesley Busby, Colour Manager at Nissan Design Europe.
“Ariya is the culmination of Nissan’s electric mobility expertise and a strong statement of intent for the future of EV design. We therefore worked hard to introduce a truly futuristic and technology-driven design language for the colours, analysing them in detail to create the perfect match for Ariya’s innovative personality,” Lesley Busby continued.
Inspired by the Japanese phrase for ‘dawn’, Akatsuki Copper’s striking appearance mimics the brilliance of a sunrise, reflecting the beginning of Nissan’s new brand identity. Its metallic sparkle is enhanced to evoke the conductivity of copper wires, honouring the model’s advanced EV technology.
Aurora Green takes its name from the beautiful ‘Northern Lights’ phenomenon, aurora borealis, commonly seen in the arctic. A sophisticated blend of different tones means the colour may appear green or purple depending on the angle that it is viewed, creating a sense of wonder and intrigue.
Technology innovation in colour
Nissan claims an all-new level of detail and depth to customer-favourite colours, created with state-of-the-art paint production techniques. Lesley Busby commented: “We know that black and white colours are some of the most popular options with vehicle owners in Europe and around the world. With Ariya, we have introduced a new level of richness and a premium veneer for these customer favourites. Combined with the quality and attention to detail seen throughout the colour palette, we’re excited for customers to experience Nissan’s new era of colour design for themselves.”
Sustainable production techniques
Technological innovation has also been employed to enhance the sustainability of the paint production line. Nissan has introduced a water-based paint which allows colours to be applied at a lower temperature, ensuring that each part of the vehicle can be painted together. This streamlines the entire application process, reducing carbon dioxide output by 25%.
The Ariya already has over 29,000 preorders worldwide according to Nissan, and is scheduled for a Japanese launch mid-2021 starting from 5 million yen ($66,700 AUD), and a European, Chinese and North American launch late in 2021.
While Nissan Australia has gone on the record as keen to import the Ariya, no Australian launch timing or pricing has been provided by the company. We’ll keep you updated if and when that changes.

The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 has been revealed to the world via an online livestream, and it looks sharp. Quite literally, because Hyundai's new 'Parametric Pixel' design language is all about creases and angles. Set to compete against the just-released Volkswagen ID.4, upcoming Volvo XC40 P8 AWD Recharge, and potentially Tesla's Model Y, the IONIQ 5 combines Hyundai’s electric vehicle know-how, with a rethink about how a vehicle can be used.

The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 has been revealed to the world via an online livestream, and it looks sharp. Quite literally, because Hyundai's new 'Parametric Pixel' design language is all about creases and angles.
Set to compete against the just-released Volkswagen ID.4, upcoming Volvo XC40 P8 AWD Recharge, and potentially Tesla's Model Y, the IONIQ 5 combines Hyundai’s electric vehicle know-how, with a rethink about how a vehicle can be used.
IONIQ 5 Drivetrain and Battery
Hyundai essentially offers four variants of the IONIQ 5:
Long Range - 72.6 kWh battery
AWD dual-motor version with 225kW (305 PS), 605Nm (446 ft-lb), 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 5.2 seconds
RWD single-motor version with 160kW (217 PS), 350Nm (258 ft-lb), 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 7.4 seconds
Standard Range - 58 kWh battery
AWD dual-motor version with 173kW (235 PS), 605Nm (446 ft-lb), 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 6.1 seconds
RWD single-motor version with 125kW (170 PS), 350Nm (258 ft-lb), 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 8.5 seconds
Based upon Hyundai’s new Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the IONIQ 5 aims to rethink how electric vehicles are used, and change preconceptions about charging. Hyundai has only quoted the WLTP rated range for the RWD Long Range variant so far, at 470-480km (292-298 miles). Based on the impressive efficiency of the Kona Electric, we’d say that it may be possible to get close to that, with some careful driving.
The new E-GMP platform is lauded by the company for it’s modular, efficient design as well as its 400/880-V charging infrastructures as standard. With a maximum charge rate of 220kW, Hyundai claims the IONIQ 5 can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 18 minutes.
Hyundai is also promoting the IONIQ 5’s Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) function, which allows customers to freely use or charge any electric devices, such as electric bicycles, scooters, computers or camping equipment via 3.6 kW outlets. V2L ports are located under the second-row seats and at the charging port on the vehicle exterior.
IONIQ 5 Exterior Design
The design of the IONIQ 5 is captivating, and has seemingly won universal praise from the majority of the media and customer base. What could be considered a fussy design feels restrained, partly because the creases and angles project the impression of a taut skin stretched over the vehicle frame.
The Parametric Pixel design language is delightfully retro yet modern simultaneously; the squared-off, chiseled front end reminds us of Alfa’s famous SZ coupe, but the LED lights and active aero flaps are definitely 21st century.
The sharp ‘Z’ crease through the side somehow works, and is nicely integrated into the rear highlight lines. In fact, the squared-off rear reminds us of another Italian - the Lancia Delta HF Integrale. With a three metre wheelbase and an overall length of 4.64 metres, this is not a small car, yet its heft is disguised and it looks more like a Euro sports hatch than a Korean SUV. At 1.6 metres tall, it’s actually higher than the Polestar 2, however it looks less ungainly.
IONIQ 5 Interior Features
It’s on the inside of the IONIQ 5 where the E-GMP platform really shines. That three metre wheelbase? Well it’s 100mm longer than Hyundai’s giant Palisade wheelbase for starters, and with the flat interior floor, Hyundai’s designers are dubbing this a ‘living space’.
There’s a universal middle island to allow passengers to enter from either side, eco-friendly yarns and plastics, a large glass roof (with optional solar panels), and wireless chargers and USB ports all round. The front seats recline to almost flat for even greater comfort, while rear headroom and legroom looks to be far beyond that expected from the compact SUV class.
The rear boot holds 531 litres, and unlike the Kona Electric, Hyundai has been able to squeeze in a front boot with a 57 litre capacity.
IONIQ 5 Vehicle Technology
Naturally, the IONIQ 5 will be well connected and tech-laden. Sporting twin 12-inch screens as well as an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR HUD), The IONIQ 5 can project navigation and other information ahead of the driver. Cloud-based Connected Routing ensures accurate navigation including live traffic forecasting, accurate re-calculation of routes and the availability of charging stations.
Hyundai’s Dynamic Voice Recognition system accepts simple voice commands to conveniently control cabin A/C, radio, tailgate hatch opening/closing, and can also assist with various points of interest (POI) and weather status updates.
Naturally, there’s a smartphone app that allows for remote starting of the vehicle, scheduling charging times and pre-heating the cabin.
There’s a full suite of active and passive safety systems, from a 360 degree surround view camera, to Driver Attention Warning (DAW) which displays the driver’s attention level and provides a warning when signs of driver inattentiveness are detected. Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) makes highway driving more convenient by utilising the front view camera, radar sensors and navigation data to control the vehicle’s speed and following distance, while keeping the vehicle centred in its lane.
The IONIQ 5 is open for pre-orders in Europe now, with deliveries expected in summer 2021. The IONIQ 5 is expected to launch in Australia in the third quarter of 2021. According to the press release, Hyundai will further expand its BEV lineup with IONIQ 6, an electric sedan, and the IONIQ 7 large electric SUV.
We’ve already expressed our excitement about getting our hands on the IONIQ 5; the vehicle topped our list for the most anticipated electric vehicles this year. Hyundai appears to have knocked it out of the park when it comes to the exterior and interior design, and if it builds on the Kona Electric’s efficiency, refinement and practicality, it should be a big seller for Hyundai. The only sticking point may be price; at £45,000 in the UK and €59,550 in Germany for the Project 45 launch edition, that equates to around AUD$91,534. While this is obviously for the top-spec variant, we’d like to see the base IONIQ 5 start closer to €30,000 in Europe or around $45,000 in Australia to be truly game changing.

The IONIQ 5 is expected to feature a 450 kilometre (280 mile) WLTP rated range from a 58kW hour battery, with an option for a 73kWh battery with a 550 kilometre (340 mile) range. With two motors, the all-wheel drive setup should scoot the IONIQ 5 to 100km/h (62mph) in 5.2 seconds courtesy of 230kW (313 PS) between the wheels.

Final prototypes have been spotted out gathering data in Australian cities over the last couple of months, and it’s expected that Australia will be an important market for Hyundai’s new IONIQ brand, as well as for its new Kona Electric which is set to launch in March 2021.
Hyundai is promising ideal weight distribution, a modular flexible interior and V2X functionality, with the ability to power computers, tools or camping equipment from build in power outlets.
We’re genuinely big fans of the IONIQ 5’s sharp design, and if the Kona Electric is anything to go by, Hyundai will continue to improve its EV offerings with the IONIQ 5 by increasing battery range, refinement, energy efficiency and luxury.

Vauxhall’s new Mokka-e is available to order in the UK, and starts from £30,840 OTR after Plug-in Car Grant. The fully electric variant features a 50kWh battery and 100kW (136PS) electric motor to produce 260Nm of torque. The new Mokka-e can drive for up to 201-miles on a single charge (WLTP) and supports up to 100kW rapid charging, with an 80% charge taking around 30 minutes.
Built on Vauxhall’s multi-energy Common Modular Platform (CMP) shared with Peugeot’s e-2008, the new Mokka measures 4,151mm long, 1,791mm wide (excluding the mirrors), and 1,531mm tall. Compared to the previous model, the new Mokka is 124mm shorter, and 10mm wider, while the wheelbase has been increased by 2mm. The shorter profile and flowing body surfaces give the new Mokka a sporty and dynamic stance.
Customers can choose between three driving modes, Normal, Eco and Sport to suit their driving requirements and energy consumption. Each mode not only alters the throttle and steering response, but also adjusts the power and torque available.
Eco: Power and torque limited to 60kW and 180Nm – maximises vehicle range
Normal: Power and torque limited to 80kW and 220Nm – ideal for daily driving
Sport: Full power and torque (100kW and 260Nm) – maximises performance
The Mokka-e comes standard with Automatic Emergency City Braking, LED headlights, speed sign detection, adaptive cruise control, Apple Carplay/Android Auto, DAB digital radio and more. The Mokka-e is available to order online, with the first vehicles scheduled to arrive at dealers by the end of March.

Roomzz concept premiered at the Shanghai Auto Show, The ID.6 is expected to have an 82kWh battery with 150KW charging and 450km range (WLTP) Power in the concept car was rated at 225 kilowatts (302 horsepower) from a pair of electric motors, and Volkswagen estimated acceleration to 100 kilometres per hour (62 miles per hour) in 6.6 seconds.
The VW ID.6 is the third vehicle to be based on the company’s MEB platform architecture, and share’s many design cues with the ID.3 and ID.4. At this stage it appears that it will be produced exclusively for the domestic Chinese market. While one might expect countries such as the USA, Australia and South Africa to be a perfect fit for the ID.6, it’s likely that Volkswagen is using the upcoming ID.4 to test the waters of the electric SUV market.
The ID.6 will likely debut at Auto Shanghai on April 21 2021.
